Toenail Fungus Types A toenail fungus occurs when fungal spores take root in the nail bed of a toenail. These spores generally gain access to the nail bed through minor injuries in the skin. The three main types of toenail fungus are dermatophytes, yeast, and mold. One strain of dermatophytes causes the most well known toenail fungus – athlete’s foot. Its scientific name is Trichophyton rubrum. Dermatophytes can live on nails, skin, and even hair! Yeast is another common offender. Yeast is present in all people. Sometimes yeast growth becomes out of control. When this happens you are very likely to develop yeast infections. Yeast infections can affect many different parts of the body and can even become a toenail fungus. The third common toenail fungus that many people contract is mold. Mold can be found in the soil and most infections are result of people walking barefoot in the dirt. As mentioned earlier, fungi make their homes in the nail beds of injured toes. It is important to protect your feet from injury for the health of your nails. Use caution because once contracted, toenail fungus can be very difficult to treat. Toenail Fungus – What Does It Look Like? Just as there are different types of fungi, there are different signs and symptoms of a toenail fungus infection. However, all toenail fungus infections have at least two similar symptoms; discoloration, and deformation. Discoloration is usually the first symptom to show up in a fungal infection. If left unchecked and untreated, your condition will most certainly worsen. Soon what was once only a discolored toenail is now a thick, cracked, misshapen nail. rnToenail Fungus – How Do I Prevent It? If you take a few extra precautions you shouldn’t have any trouble avoiding a toenail fungus at all!rnThe best tip that any doctor will give you is to stay clean. Doctors suggest that you wash and completely dry your feet before bed every night. Dry feet are paramount in the fight against toenail fungus because fungi love places that are warm and moist. Dry feet are so important that you should bring extra socks along with you whether it’s time for work, school, or play. rnAnother factor to consider is shoe selection. Only buy shoes made out of natural fibers. This type of shoe will allow your feet to “breathe”. Wear sandals and open toed shoes whenever the situation allows. Even though this one might be difficult ladies, do not share shoes! It is imperative to keep your feet covered at all times when you walk in a public area like a pool or public shower. Think hygiene! Never share nail clippers, files, or towels with another. A mold toenail fungus might be spread through dirt, but all of the others are spread by unsuspecting humans. rnKeeping your toenails out of harm’s way goes a long way towards protecting your nails from toenail fungus. Be sure and do your part and you shouldn’t have any problem with toenail fungus.
