As of now, Tiger Woods is pursuing the goal of becoming the best golfer of all time, but the road is tough, as there are still some big names in the game that are ahead of him, and in this article, we will present you a list of the top PGA golfers in history.
- Jack Nicklaus: Also called the “Golden Bear”, he managed to transcend this sport by being known all over the world not just for the successes achieved during his career, but also because of his talent for designing golf courses, which helped to expand the game considerably. He managed to capture eighteen tournament wins, with the most meaningful being his victory in The Masters in 1986.
- Ben Hogan: He ended his career with 9 major victories, and if he had not suffered an almost mortal car accident, it is certain that he may have achieved more. Such car cash took place in 1949, when he was in his prime, and prevented him from continuing to play professionally.
- Tiger Woods: He was once known as the Mike Tyson of the sport, and with fourteen majors in his pocket, it is quite reasonably that some critics had said that he is even better than the “Golden Bear”, as when he was playing in his prime, he did not just came up with victories, as he was a true dominating force, though sadly, his personal life has clouded his professional career, prompting him to play poorly.
- Arnold Palmer: This player managed to win 7 majors, but the real reason why he made it to this list is because he is the true ambassador of Golf, helping to make the sport more popular thanks to initiatives such as “Arnie’s Army”, his global fan base.
- Gene Sarazen: Apart for been known as the creator of the sand wedge, he conquered 7 majors during his career. In fact, he was the first to come up with a victory in a Grand Slam back in 1935. He played again Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones during one of the most competitive eras of the sport.
- Gary Player: This South African made a legend for himself after competing against golfers such as Nicklaus. He won 4 majors.
- Bobby Jones: He managed to win a Grand Slam during the era of Sarazen and Hagen, though he was content with playing as an amateur, which is the reason why he never turned pro.
- Tom Watson: He has 8 majors in his pocket and was near to win the British Open just last year, and at age 61, he still has some time to come up with more victories and rank higher.
- Walter Hagen: He was the first to be a Ryder Cup captain. Hagen managed to conquer eleven majors during his career. He competed against Jones and Sarazen during the so-called “Golden Era of Golf”. He is often credited as one of the players that helped to make of the sport one the most profitable ones.
- Byron Nelson: Even though he only played professionally for eleven years, he managed to retire with five majors and a grand slam victory, retiring with only 34 years of age.
