The National Geographic's Traveler magazine has named Kerala as one of the "ten paradises of the world" and enumerates it as "50 must see destinations of a lifetime". A Kerala tour package encompasses all that you hope to experience on a holiday - beaches, backwaters, emerald lagoons and endless stretches of greenery. It is little wonder then that the people of Kerala fondly call it God’s own country. Animal lovers, nature lovers and water babies alike will have a splendid time in Kerala. rnKerala is that narrow strip of land hemmed by Arabian waters at the southern tip of Indian borders, beautified by its swaying green palm trees and white washed shores. The North, South and West of Kerala offers you a peak into different walks of life from remote isolated retreats and harbors to swarming rave parties and upscale resorts. Kerala could be about the cascading green landscapes but if you intend on saving your enthusiasm for laidback beach shacks then here’s what to do. Kovalam: An Ayurvedic Escape This crescent shaped beach south of Trivandrum was once a wayfarer’s paradise. Today, the beachscape here has undergone a slight change because of the recent spark of high end hotels, many of which confer heavenly massage treatments. Ayurvedic treatments are one of the reasons you see many people harp about this beach. The beach parties, magic shows and an all night clubbing street just amplifies your retreat to Kovalam. You can hire a boogie board here, and set sail. Kayaking, surfing, swimming and water skiing are some other water borne activities you can adopt. The picturesque sunsets and sunrises cruise bring romance to the air. Around Kovalam, there are ample museums and forts you can trek to, namely Padmanabhapuram Palace, Napier Museum and Anchuthengu Fort. Alappuzha: For the love of Lagoons The charming lagoons of Alappuzha take your breath away. Known to many as ‘Venice of the East’, Alappuzha has one of the finest beaches in Kerala. The deep blue skies, pure crystallized shore and bluish-green water is a lover’s paradise. The serenity automatically makes the surrounding romantic with chirping and plodding birds serenading you with their songs. Alappuzha harbors a 140 years old pier that extends to the beach. Apart from sunbathing, you can take a backwater trip in a houseboat, shop for handicrafts and visit Karumadikuttan a Buddhist temple and fishing villages enroute. You can participate in the boat races conducted from August to October. Bird watching is another activity of interest at Alappuzha for tourists. Varkala: Picture Perfect A tasteful and quiet option as compared to the bustling Kovalam, the Varkala beach is a spectacle in true sense. Resting below the elevated red cliffs, this beach is a photographer’s treasure. The sun kissed beach witnesses enrapturing sunsets and spellbinding scenic beauty. The edge of the cliff is stocked with bamboo cafés and shops. You can cruise through the Backwaters once in Varkal and catch sunbathing Dolphins gracing the vista. On other days, you can simply cruise through the Varkala Tunnel which is a canal ride similar to the ones you find in Venice and Holland. The Anjengo fort is another star attraction in the vicinity that interests people. The Kapil Lake is a stretch of water parallel to a coconut grove extending to the horizon. Marari: A Soulful Indulgence Marari beach is adjacent to a fishing village called Mararikulam. When you head to Marari beach, you can take a dip in the sea and ferry along the backwaters too. Marari is situated in Alleppey and has been a comely stopover. Surf boarders head down to Marari because of the high welcoming waves. The villagers here concentrate more on ecological balance and peace, hence there will be no intrusions spoiling your quality time. rnMake sure that your Kerala tour package includes a trip to some or all of these beaches. If you want to have a high spirited holiday in Kerala you can head to Kovalam or Varkala. However, for a hush-hush time you can bask under the Alappuzha and Marari sun.
