Almost no one would think about taking a trip, in fact any trip, without 1st making a plan. Many people have a navigation unit in our cars or a handheld unit. There are many manufacturers of these devices. Pretend we name the one we own Gloria—mine has a female voice. If yours is a male voice, you might not want to use the name Gloria so pick another.

Most of these machines work pretty much the same way.

First, each of these machines contain or can access a map of the territory. Almost every one of these machines has a map that covers a very large area. Normally, all of the United States and Canada. But, the map is not the actual terrain it's only a drawing of the terrain. More on that distinction in a bit. What's perfect about that is you have access to the entire map any time, but do not have to worry about it all. Instead you focus on the road between your current location and your destination. A paper map can be utilized in the same way. You only need to look at a short part of it.

Next, decide where you want to go. You need not worry about how to get there. All you really need to do is to enter your address into the machine's keyboard. After that, some machines ask if you would like a quick, short, scenic or freeway only sort of a journey. Either way after entering the address and deciding on your trip criteria you're ready.

The 3rd step is to begin driving. You don't have to worry about which way to start out. You can even go in entirely the wrong direction. Gloria will keep you on track. Think about this for a while. No matter what you do, Gloria will correct your behavior. If you take a left when you should take the right, Gloria will give you a new instruction to get you back on track. Gloria never scolds just provides suggested corrective action. You don't have to do it, but if you don't she'll provide another suggestion, "Take the next available left and then the next left after that". This process continues until you've reached your destination.

What is the relationship between a navigation device and business?

We've discovered that very few businesses utilize a guidance or navigation technique. Instead, they operate out of what I call an emergent strategy—dealing with what comes up, when it comes up. The utilization of this method is not in and of itself a bad idea. Many businesses are in simple environments. This concept of dealing with things as they arrive on the scene works well for these kinds of companies.

Instead of physical destinations. Our business destinations are the goals we set. Much like physical destinations our goals can be a short time from now or a long time from now. Think of the actions required to reach them as short trips. Record these goals at periodic meetings and make everyone's goals available to the entire team. Recording goals is the equivalent of entering destinations into a navigation system.

Everybody is either on target or off target on their objectives at any point in time. Everybody either reaches or misses their goals (destinations) when the time comes. Periodic progress reporting meetings to ascertain where people are on their goals. Then, everyone can make suggestions to each other. Each person is free to reject or accept their teammates input.
