Even if you have purchased a used caravan over a brand new one, it is still a very big investment for many families. It is for these reason that you will want to make sure that you take good care of your caravan, otherwise you could be up for some costly repairs or even the need to replace the van altogether. If you want to prevent your investment from developing premature damage, follow these maintenance tips:

  • Gas and Electrics
It is likely that your used caravan will be fitted with some sort of gas or electrical works, such as the refrigerator, stove or even a hot water service. A professional should complete annual maintenance on these areas to ensure that the appliances are working properly and that all the cords are intact.
  • Exterior
The annoying reality is that dirt, grime and other debris will accumulate on your caravan over time, so it is important to regularly clean the exterior of your van, not only to keep it looking as good as new but also to keep it waterproof and protected. Wash your van the same as you would your car.
  • Window and Door Latches
Making sure that your used caravan is secure against thieves is one of the most important maintenance tasks that you need to complete. If the latches of your doors and windows are not secure, it will be very easy for someone to get in. When checking the latches, you should also check that the seals are tight and intact.
  • Rust
As many parts of used caravans will be constructed out of metal, it is important that you regularly check these parts for the presence of rust and corrosion. Whilst a little rust is not too worrisome, you should keep an eye on these areas and be prepared to replace these fittings should the problem get any worse.
  • Wheels
Before and after each trip in your caravan, you should thoroughly check over the wheels of your van. You need to make sure that they have plenty of air in them and that the tyres are completely intact and don’t have any splits or punctures. Any sign of these problems, and you will need to change the tyres as soon as possible.

When it comes to used caravan ownership, it is of the utmost importance that you regularly perform some maintenance tasks. Not only will this keep your caravan in fantastic condition (which will be a great advantage should you ever decide to sell up), it will help to prevent premature damage and breakdowns while you’re on the road.
