This Hinchinbrook Island destination experiences peak seasons and low seasons, with the most preferred time being in the months betwee
May and October. Cool to warm conditions make this period a very pleasant time to explore the Island.

One can get to Hinchinbrook from the mainland towns of Cardwell or Lucinda. The ferry port is to be found at Cardwell. These ferries, which depart daily at 9am, take guests to the north of the island. From Cairns, Cardwell can be reached in under three hours by road. There are many types of accommodation on the island to suit a range of tastes and budgets. Camping is an ideal choice for those on a shoestring budget. It is also a good way to gain an intimate experience with the environment. Most camp sites, some of which are located on beaches, require their guests to attain permits. These permits are issued for a variety of reasons. Most importantly is for the maintenance of the island itself. These fees go towards wildlife preservation, as well as for the alleviation of any hazards that could put the area in danger, like fires.

Some areas, like the Macusla site, provide visitors with limited comforts. These include water that is good for showering, some outdoor cooking tools and picnic benches. Other sites simply offer a bare-bones experience, without any additions. Look into Goold Island, Garden Island and The Haven for these types of camp sites.

There is, however, a resort to cater for those who require a few more creature comforts on their trip. The Hinchinbrook Island Resort offers all the required facilities, as well as a pool and restaurant. Rain Forest Tree Houses give visitors the special opportunity to dwell like the natural inhabitants on Hinchinbrook - in a tree. For a more stripped-down approach, beach huts can be rented. These offer simple kitchen tools for self-catering.

Many travelers recommend the three night Hinchinbrook Thosrborne trail for a unique hiking experience. This route stretches from Ramsay Bay on the north coast, to George Point in the South. Hikers should come prepared in advance for this journey, providing all camping tools and amenities before arriving on the island.
