As the medical science has been evolving continuously, there are new technologies that have been introduced. These inventions have gone a long way in relieving patients from various illnesses and disorders. One such surgical procedure gaining momentum is Total Knee Replacement. This surgery is beneficial for people suffering from arthritis, knee joint pains and osteoarthritis. It is usually recommended for patients having severe pain, impaired function and major destruction of the knee joint. The surgery involves the replacement of the damaged or the diseased knee joint with artificial material. It is the end of both femur bone and the lower leg bone (tibia) that is removed and replaced with a metal shell and a grooved plastic piece simultaneously. The artificial elements used in replacement of knee joint are referred to as the prosthesis. In this surgery, the hind ligament, a tissue that holds each side of the knee joint preventing the lower leg from sliding backward is either retained or replaced by plyethylene post. The most common condition for which the surgery is done is severe osteoarthritis. Other than this, there is also partial knee surgery which involves removing only the few majorly damaged area of cartilage. This surgery is being recommended and done widely. The success is mainly because of the rehabilitation period that follows. Post surgery the patient is placed in a continuous passive motion machine which moves the knee while you are still in bed. One can also be put on pain medication if needed. In case nausea follows the doctor should be informed. For two or three days after surgery one may experience high temperature which is normal. In early stages of the therapy sessions the importance is given on maintaining the motion of the knee replacement. The physical therapy has to start immediately after the operation. The therapist also ensures that the patient can walk safely and comfortably. The operation may give a scar tissue as well. In order to recover completely and to gain normal motion it is necessary for the patient to concentrate on bending and straightening their knee replacement. Strenuous activities are to be avoided for about 6 weeks but walking for long distances can prove to be beneficial. Even icing the knee for 20-30 minutes daily is beneficial for it keeps the pain and swelling away. Even though there are many people opting for Total Knee Replacement, it has its own risks involved. Before undergoing the surgery it is very important for the patient to have a good discussion with the doctor on this topic. It is also important for one to know the basics of the surgery and question the doctor involving topics like the recovery time it will take, time period for hospital stay, if it will be too painful process, the therapy sessions, duration for complete rest, restriction from certain activities, complications that can arise after the surgery.
