Tourist Guide to Almeria - Spain

Almeria is a historical town in Spain and the meaning of Almeria in Spanish literature is “Mirror of the Sea” as this town is located on the coast. Established by the famous Muslim ruler Abdurrahman III, Almeria was used as an important town by the Moorish rulers on account of its port and the city achieved peak development in terms of cultural values and economic growth during the 11th century.

The city has many wonderful and iconic monuments and most of them even exist today. Alcazaba is one of such monument which is located on the hill near the town and it is surrounded by very impressive walls. Behind these walls you can see a number of hills and the single desert on the Iberian Peninsula is also located there.

The climate of Almeria is perfect for tourists and it attracts number of visitors every year to this historical land. The city is also known for the cultivation of a variety of vegetables and fruits along with the production of solar energy and these are helping the economy to grow fast.

There are many other attractions in Almeria besides the historic and iconic monuments like plenty of sandy beaches, natural parks and a number of cultural and sports events.

Cathedral

This cathedral has an exclusive fortified structure unique in Andalusia and it was constructed during the 16th century. The cathedral has a façade built in the Renaissance style.

La Alcazaba

This is a beautiful fortress built by the Moorish during their rule over this city. This fortress is surrounded by impressive walls and located on the top of a hill from where you can have some great views of the city and the sea. This fortress is the second biggest building of Moorish rule in Spain after the Alhambra which is located in Granada.

Church of Santiago

This church is comparatively small and was built during the 16th century and it has a beautiful tower in Roman style and the portal of the church is built in Renaissance style.

Barrio de la Chanca

This is a beautiful scenic location in Almeria. Located under Alcazaba, it has many beautiful multicolor facades and some houses which have caves. The residents in this area are mostly fishermen.

Almeria Museum

This museum contains the historical works of different ages dating from pre-historical times to the Moorish rule in Spain.
