If you have finally decided to get a dog door for your house, you would probably think that it is easy to train your pet to use the dog door just like you see in the movies. But there are other dogs which are much harder to train as compared to the others. Because of this, here are some important things you need to know so that you can teach your dog to use the dog door.
Probably the reason why you had a dog door installed is so that your pet can let himself out during the daytime so he can play, go to the bathroom, or even to just walk around outside. Because of this, you no longer have to head to the door a minimum tweny times everyday so that you can let your dog in and out. But unlike those movies that we see, dogs don't get accustomed to it right away. This is why you first need to introduce the use of the dog door to him so that he will become more comfortable with the idea.
You will need to lift the flap and encourage your pet to go through it by himself. If he is able to do so, you also need to go to the other side and lift the flap again. There are some dogs which take lots of encouragement while there are also others which will tentatively proceed to their owner. Regardless of the timidness level of your pet, you must reward him with lots of praise. There are even some people who leave a treat on the other side of the flap so that dogs can venture through it on1 their own.
The next thing you should do is not to lift the dog door's flap anymore. Instead, you should stand on the other side of the door and you need to encourage your dog to come out through the flap. Once he gets it right, you should praise him as well as reward him with a doggie treat. Soon enough, your dog will go in and out of the door on his own numerous times a day.
However, there are some instances wherein there are some dogs who cannot get the idea quite well. Because of this, you might need to teach your dog how to go through the door by doing it yourself. Although you have to make sure first that you can fit the dog door. Otherwise you might get stuck. Dogs will immediately follow your action of going through the door since they will think it is a game.
When you are training your pet to go through this door, you also need to teach him if the insert has been put in so that he will not hurt himself by jumping onto the hard plastic. Your dog should know that he has to be careful with using the door so that he will not hurt himself.
As with any other training, you must not lose your patience. There is no stubborn dog. Your pet will eventually learn how to do it.
