“Could you really turn the desert into a lush green land? Fifty years ago, one man firmly believed it was possible. For Sheikh Zayed the only limit was your imagination. To turn his vision into reality, the Founding Father summoned prominent agricultural experts from around the world to the oasis at Buraimi. After seeing the barren land, most decided to return home. Except for a 25-year-old graduate in agricultural science from Karachi in Pakistan. Abdul Hafeez Khan Al Yousefi faced the daunting task of turning the desert green on his arrival in Abu Dhabi in 1962. But Sheikh Zayed’s friendship and passion for the project led him to stay well beyond his one-year contract.“ (The National/ UAE)

Sheikh Zayed had the vision to return the desert to its greener origins by increasing the number of trees, farms and palm orchards. He did his research and discovered that “15,000 years ago, the Arabian Peninsula was a very different place. Enveloped in thick forests and full of greenery, the land got transformed to a desert only after it was exposed to a long spell of drought that also forced its inhabitants to move in search of water. In time, the forests were buried and gradually transformed into the region's black gold or oil.” (Gulfnews/Environment)

Today, trees are seen all over in the UAE. One of the most beautiful drives is the main road betwee
Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. There are trees the entire drive, as well as date palms on both sides of the road. The Emirates have become one of the leading date producers today. With all the green around, the air feels much cleaner and I was told there is more rainfall now. One article mentioned that the Emirates are building a mountain to increase rainfall utilizing the concept of Orographic precipitation, and also significantly investing in research to produce artificial rain (http://www.abudhabi2.com/uae-mulls-man-made-mountain-in-bid-to-improve-rainfall/).

"The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious." — John Scully
