You can be proud of yourself. The book you’ve been working so hard on is finally ready. It is time to wait for the people to read it and give their feedback. Maybe, you’ve already seen some positive reviews and are thinking about selling it on the international market. If you have the intentions to do so, the first thing you need to consider is your book’s translation. Once you’ve researched the market of your interest and decided that the local readers will appreciate your efforts, start making a plan. If the target language is French, you can either use a professional English to French written translation service or do it yourself if you are fluent in both languages. It is not always a good idea for the author of a book to translate the content. Speaking a language does not guarantee the smooth and logical flow of thoughts. Here’s what you can do.

Mind the cultural differences

If it is a fiction book you’ve written, there might be some cultural aspects you will have to review. Some things or events that are clear and relatable to the readers in one country, can be completely unusual for those leaving overseas. To give you an idea of such differences, here’s a quick example. It is common for the western cultures to see a picture of a stork bringing a newborn baby while the eastern cultures have no idea of this concept. It is advisable to use cultural highlights to make the book appealing and help the characters to be convincing. You will need an expert to analyze your manuscript and advice you on these nuances.

Maintain the style

It might be rather difficult to find the appropriate equivalents for your metaphors and jokes you use in the book. But it does not mean you should change the style dramatically. If you are cooperating with a professional translator, make sure you communicate this message to them. There is always a way to maintain the mood and individual writing technique. Your aim is to keep the spirit of the book.

Find an expert in your subject area

If your book focuses on a specific subject area, make sure to hire an expert with the relevant background. You need someone who knows the terminology and uses it correctly. You can visit some online forums and read blogs in the target language dedicated to the topic. Some terms may sound the same and others will have a big difference in how they are used. Don’t let these little details spoil the impression of your writing.

Hire an editor

It does not matter if a translation agency will be working on your book or you will do it, there still has to be a professional editor to apply a finishing touch. This person will proofread the text and make sure there are no inconsistencies or typos. You won’t be able to to do everything on your own. A person who can take a fresh look at your work will be of great help.

The original will always be better

You will definitely have this feeling by the end of the translation process. No matter how good the final result is, it will never reach the level of perfection of the original. You should know that the second version will never feel to be whole even if you do everything you can. Be prepared to face this feeling and move on. Know when to stop editing and start selling your masterpiece.
