Previously known as 'Bombay', the city of Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra. Counted among the most popular cities in India, Mumbai lies on the west coast of India. It is said that Mumbai is a city that never sleeps. Profused with discotheques, restaurants and night clubs, Mumbai seems like a city where you can enjoy anytime. It is also known for its happening nightlife.
The famous attractions of Mumbai include the following:
The Haji Ali Dargah
This tomb is a must visit place for the devotees. A mosque complex on an islet in the Worli bay, the Dargah is named after a Muslim merchant, who built the edifice in 1431. People of all faiths visit this holy place. This prestigious landmark is located about 500 yards from the Mumbai shoreline amidst the Arabian Sea of Lala Lajpatrai Marg.
Gateway of India
It is the most important landmark in the city. Built on the sea front, it is one such landmark that you can not skip while visiting Mumbai. From here people can also go to Elephanta Caves by taking ferry boats. These boats take around the harbour for 20 minutes. The enhanced beauty to gateway is Taj Mahal hotel and the tower situated opposite Gateway of India.
Chowpatty Beach
This beautiful beach is a place that needs no introduction. No visit to Mumbai is complete without making any visit to this lively beach. Located at the northern end of Marine drive, the beach is famous amongst people of every age group. In the evening, the atmosphere becomes very lively where you can see kids making noise on Ferris wheels or enjoying pony rides, monkey shows, bhelpuri shops hawking and lots more.
Siddhivinayak Temple
This famous temple of Mumbai attracts large number of tourists every year. It houses a Kalash, which is a pointed dome of 12 feet high Gabhara (sanctum sanctorum), weighing around 1500 kg and is gold plated. Dating back to 18th century, Vinayak is known to be one of the Ashta Vinayak Shrines. The temple houses a small mandapam (hall) with the shrine for Siddhi Vinayak. A Hanuman Temple also lies in the periphery of this temple.
Essel World
Known as India's largest amusement park, Essel World is a popular attraction of Mumbai. Offering 40 exciting rides, interesting games and attractions, it holds the attention of visitors. It is also known for its theme park, which is largest in Asia. The spot is ideal for one day outing with family, friends or colleagues. Sprawling over 64 acres, it offers both exciting day rides as well as fun water rides.
Other attractions include Jehangir Art Gallery, Bollywood, Elephanta Caves, Film City, Prithvi Theatre, Prince of Wales Museum, Juhu Beach and Hanging Gardens.
