What’s the first thought on your mind when you’re facing the most overwhelming challenges in your life? Maybe you’re thinking “I just want to get out of here.” That’s a natural reaction: you don’t only want to leave the problems behind, but you also want to experience something new and exciting… something that will remind you how great life is. rnBefore we get any further, let’s clarify something important: you can’t escape from your problems if you travel. They will remain right there, waiting for your return. However, traveling shifts your whole point of view. You start perceiving the world from a different stand. You see the great picture and you realize how minor your problems are. They are not insignificant, but they are also not impossible to solve. Travelling feeds your soul and helps you gain new skills and interests. In other words, travelling really makes you a better person. You’re still not convinced? Let’s go through 10 reasons why you should consider travelling as a method for self-improvement.

1. You’ll meet people

When you’re travelling (especially if you’re doing it alone), you open yourself to new friendships and acquaintances. The biggest adventures and greatest personal growth come from new connections. You start understanding how people around the world live and perceive life in general. You will understand their culture and you’ll start accepting different opinions. rnMeeting and interacting with people from around the world will change the way you communicate your thoughts and ideas. You’ll feel free to express your opinions and you’ll start perceiving socializing as a relaxed, enjoyable activity.

2. Travelling helps you understand your own culture, too

You can’t really understand the place you come from if you don’t compare it to other cities, countries, and cultures. When you first become part of a foreign social system, you’ll be mesmerized by the subtle differences that draw your attention. In some countries, for example, people serve birthday cakes as soon as their guests arrive. In other places, the guests get their cakes at the end of the party, and that’s a sign they should all head home. That’s a banal example that brings us to the point: you understand your own habits as practices as part of a unique culture. rnThe quality of the food, people’s manners, fashion trends, traffic culture… you’ll spot many differences in several aspects of living. Try to think where these behavioral patterns come from and what makes you act differently in specific situations. You’re part of a specific culture with unique values and standards. Maybe you don’t agree with all of them, but your culture is part of who you are.

3. With travelling, you let go of prejudices

It doesn’t matter whether you’re an atheist or a believer; you certainly have prejudices towards people who don’t think the way you do. Religion is a beautiful thing when people don’t take it for granted and they don’t use it as a reason to hate other cultures. All religions teach people how to become better and devote themselves to achieving universal love. rnPeople who travel to India are mesmerized by the way Hindus respect their traditions, but they also respect other religious systems. rnWhen you explore different beliefs and religious practices, you may start questioning your prejudices. You’ll see how people support each other in times of happiness and grief. Of course you won’t convert to a new religion if you already have established values, but you will understand their need to connect with higher power, and you’ll observe their practices without judging them. rnFreeing yourself from judgmental attitude is a certain sign that you’re growing into a better person.

4. You will break routines

You have a job that consumes your energy throughout the day. Then you get back home, you eat something, you watch the weekly episode of the TV shows you’re following, and you go to sleep. You keep repeating that routine until the weekend, when you hang out with the same friends in the same coffee shop, repeating the same conversations over and over again. Such routine can be devastating to your optimism levels. rnTravelling takes you out of that pattern and faces you with exciting challenges. The moment you set foot in another city or country, you’ll realize that you’re no longer stuck in that place of insane routine and intense boredom. You’ll test your limits and you’ll realize that you’re not a boring person at all.

5. You will learn new skills

New destinations bring opportunities for learning history facts, cooking new meals, and speaking a few words and phrases in a new language. If, for example, you visit Barcelona, you will see the amazing architecture and you’ll develop interest in exploring the art and science of building. rnYou can keep working on these skills and interests when you get home, so you’ll always have something to do in your free time. Plus, you’ll be a fun person to be around, since your friends will have something to learn from you.

6. You understand the person you’re traveling with

If you’re taking a trip with your partner, you get a chance to see him/her in a whole different light. You’ll be spending entire days together with the person you’re traveling with. You’ll learn how to come to an agreement regarding the places you visit, the meals you have, and the way you organize your time. rnYou will see how this person behaves 24/7, and you’ll understand how he/she reacts to the same sights and situations you are observing. In other words, travelling gives you a chance to see how compatible you are. If you can deal with your partner 24 hours a day without serious frustrations, then you’re one step closer to a bright future.

7. You’ll share amazing moments with other people

Travelling is all about building precious memories. You will go through unforgettable moments, and you’ll share them with the people you’re traveling with. If you’re traveling alone, you’ll share those moments with new friends or complete strangers. Whatever the case is, you’ll spread the positive vibes and you’ll enjoy being around people while living your life to the fullest.

8. You’ll become responsible with the way you spend your money

Proper budgeting is certainly a skill that leads to self-improvement. Due to the fact that you have a limited budget when traveling, you’ll plan how to spend every cent with great responsibility. You will pay for transport, accommodation, meals, drinks, museums, and other sights you want to see. If you don’t plan your expenses well, you’ll end up short by the end of the trip. That’s not something you want to happen, so travelling itself makes you more responsible with the way you spend your money. rnWhen you get back, you can continue developing the skill of proper budgeting.

9. You learn how to connect the real way

Who said you needed your smartphone, tablet, and laptop to stay connected? These devices may allow you to keep touch with your friends, but they are also great barriers that stand between you and the true meaning of connections. rnTravelling helps you realize that real experiences cannot be compared to the things you see on the Internet. You saw photos and reviews of the sights you visit, but the feeling of experiencing reality with your body, mind, and soul is priceless. You’ll have real conversations with people, and you’ll connect with yourself on a deeper level.

10. You will step outside your comfort zone

Personal growth happens when you accept new challenges and you leave the shell that’s been suffocating you for so long. You break the patterns and learn how to handle different situations. When you imagine yourself in a room full of people you don’t know, it’s hard to make yourself comfortable with that image. Travelling, however, makes those situations completely natural. Thus, you realize you’re much stronger than you thought you were.

Bottomline: Travelling Makes You a More Inspired, Better Person

When you visit new places, you learn many things you can’t discover through reading and online research. You explore foreign destinations and you meet new people. Travelling helps you understand different cultures and habits, but it also takes you to a deeper level: you start understanding yourself better. rnYou discover new interests, you exit your comfort zone, and you finally learn you’re more than capable to face the unknown. Your old problems might be still present when you get back home, but you’ll start approaching them with an optimistic point of view.
