Treat Diarrhea effectively with generic lomotil

Lomotil is a medicine that is used in the treatment of diarrhea. It helps by slowing down the contractions of the large intestine. It can also be used for treating patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Description and uses of Lomotilr
This medicine is used in patients suffering from diarrhea or other gastrointestinal disorders like Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome. The active ingredients of this medicine are diphenoxylate hydrochloride and atropine sulfate. It slows down or completely stops the movements and contractions of the large intestine and thus helps in the treatment of diarrhea.

Side effects of Lomotilr
Some patients may complain of mild side effects after taking Lomotil. The side effects of this medicine could be difficulty in passing urine, blurring of vision, confusion in the mind, headache, dryness of mouth, dryness of skin and fever. In some cases, the symptoms may be pronounced; like dullness, severe weakness, drowsiness, depression, rashes on the skin, numbness, tingling in the hands or legs, lightheadedness, itching of the skin and swelling of the gums. Patients are advised to notify the physician in case of appearance of these symptoms. Some rare side effects of the medicine are loss of appetite, constipation, bloating and pain in the stomach.

Precautions to be takenr
Lomotil is contraindicated, if the patient is suffering from diarrhea as an allergic reaction to antibiotics. Also, it should not be given to patients suffering from infectious diarrhea. Use of Lomotil is contraindicated in patients, who are suffering from ulcerative colitis and liver disorders as it can lead to a serious disorder called toxic megacolon.

Overdose of Lomotilr
Symptoms of overdose of Lomotil are given below –
• Severe drowsiness
• Dryness of throat, mouth and nose
• Blurred vision
• Changes in near vision
• Tachycardia
• Difficulty in breathing
• Nervousness, restlessness
• Irritability and unusual excitement
• Flushing of skin
• Unusually warm ski

Patients should contact the doctor if they notice these symptoms, to rule out the possibility of an overdose of Lomotil.

Dosage of Lomotilr
The dose recommended for Lomotil is 2 tablets to be taken 4 times in a day. Liquid Lomotil should be taken in a dose of 2 teaspoonfuls at a time, 4 times in a day. This dose can be reduced once the initial period of severe diarrhea is under control. Patients may show improvement in symptoms within 48 hours of starting treatment with Lomotil. The medicine should be used in children only after careful consultation with a doctor. It should be given to children only after weighing the pros and cons of taking this medicine. Also, it is necessary to assess the level of dehydration and nutritional status of the child before giving Lomotil. For children below 13 years of age, Lomotil Syrup can be used. The dose of Lomotil for children below 13 years of age is 0.3-0.4 mg/kg body weight. This dose has to be administered in 4 equally divided doses. It is not recommended for children below the age of 2 years.

When this medicine is prescribed for diarrhea, it is necessary to couple the treatment with fluids and electrolyte supplements. Several cases of diarrhea present with severe dehydration. A fluid imbalance needs to be corrected by oral or intravenous administration of liquids to avoid severe dehydration and collapse. Also, electrolyte imbalance in the body should be assessed and corrected simultaneously while treating the patient with Lomotil.
