Nails are very important part of a human body which helps in protecting cells and tissue of fingers and toes. It is the hardest skin cells which are made up of keratin (a protein which is found in skin and hair). A look of the toenail or fingernail says the medical condition of a person, such as whether a person is suffering from heart disease, diabetes and other ailments. As we grow, nails thicken and become more susceptible to fungal and bacterial infections and cause many nail disorders such as Toenail fungus, Fingernail fungus, splinter hemorrhages and ingrown toenail.
Toenail fungus is popularly known as Onychomycosis which is the most common disease of the nails which occurs due to fungal infection. It has affected around 6-8% of adult populations and rarely affects the children, as the infection increases with age. The Fungus infections occur in toenails when fungi find a small entry in the nail through cuticles. Moist environment inside the person’s socks and shoes increases the risk of this disease. Toenail fungus is more difficult to treat as the nails of toe grow very slowly than the fingernails. The infection mostly occurs in a small or big toe.

Causes
The risk of Toenail fungus becomes high when a person uses public gyms and swimming pools. The condition becomes worsen if it spreads from one toe to another or other parts of the body. It can be passed to other family members too. Athletes who wear tight-fitting shoes are also at high-risk of this disease. Tight fitting socks and shoes cause strain to the toes and can damage the surrounding skin of the toes. Other factors like moist skin, diabetes, abnormal PH level of the skin also cause this disorder.
Treatment
It is difficult to treat the Toenail fungus nail disease, but it is better to prevent this disease by adopting some good habits. For instance, a person can wear protective shoes in swimming pools and public gyms to avoid this ailment. They can avoid sharing their towel and shoes with a person who is suffering from this disorder. Try to keep your feet dry and clean it thoroughly with proper soap and cleansers. Further, use moisturizer and oil on a daily basis to keep your nails smooth and healthy. Women should avoid nail polish on the toes, as it can seal in fungus and increase the risk of fungal infection in toenails. Severe fungal infection in the toe is likely to be treated with prescribed medications. A patient should visit the health clinic and consult a doctor for the best recommendation for this problem. Doctors may prescribe oral anti fungal medicines or they may remove infected nails by filling, trimming and dissolving it to diminish the fungal infection in toenails.
