8/27/09 Receding Gums Receding gums are a major indicator of periodontal disease. You may not realize that persistent sore, swollen, red, or bleeding gums, tooth pain or sensitivity and bad breath are warning signs of periodontal disease - a serious condition which clinical studies have revealed that, when left untreated, may lead to tooth loss as well as * heart attackrn* strokern* diabetesrn* respiratory diseasesrn* premature/underweight babies rnThere are two reasons for receding gums and one is brushing too aggressively with a toothbrush with hard bristles. Use a soft bristle toothbrush. Be gentle because your gums are sensitive, soft tissue and is easily damaged when brushed too harshly. While this is usually only a contributor and may not affect you... Here is the short version of why overrn99% of all oral care problems occur: "22 common bacteria" There it is. Now you know. It's not rocket science and in fact it has been known for a long, long time. So why is it so hard to get this information and why won't the dentists just fess up and tell you? I will leave that for another discussion but you probably know the answer. Here is the full story and how easy it is to overcome receding gums. These common 22 bacteria are produced by us (humans) 24 hours a day. This is a naturally occurring event that you can not stop, but you can control it. Your saliva is your body's natural defense to these bacteria because your saliva is extremely rich in oxygen and certain enzymes that are the natural enemies to the 22 bacteria. We get many calls a day from customers thinking that age, stomach issues and other things are the cause of their problems. But it isn't any of those; it is simply about 22 bacteria and rarely anything else. The problem is not caused by most of the popular toothpastes and mouthwashes but it is greatly exacerbated by them. Remember, the cause is 22 known bacteria. Now, the real problem is that prolonged exposure to almost all toothpastes and mouthwashes have two very big problems for our bodies. Firstly, they dry out the mouth and a dry mouth allows for these problem bacteria to grow and multiply at a MUCH faster rate. This is why people who sleep with their mouths open have a much higher rate of bad breath and other oral health problems. A dry mouth is bad news. A chemical in toothpaste (sodium lauryl sulfate) which almost all major brands of toothpaste have in them, is a detergent which makes the toothpaste suds up and over time and prolonged use--drys out the mouth and can affect the mucosal lining of your mouth. The same thing for most mouthwashes. Alcohol and some of the other chemicals used to kill bacteria can also dry out the mouth and can damage the lining of your mouth. Over time, not only do you produce less saliva which is your natural defense to these bacteria, the oxygen and enzyme levels are greatly decreased thereby allowing the bacteria to get a leg up on you. Slowly but surely, the bacteria begins to win the battle. It starts with bad breath which is caused by the maturing of these bacteria and they give off what is called Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSC gases) or bad breath to you and me. From there, the bacteria quickly mature further into toxins. It is these toxins that actually "eat the skin cells of the gums". Yes, your pockets or receding gums is caused by the bacteria turning into toxins and actually eating the soft tissue of your gums leading to bleeding, soreness, tenderness, gingivitis, and in a short period of time...pockets, gum recession and periodontal disease (gum disease). Gum disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. These bacteria create toxins that damage the gums and frequently causes receding gums and pockets. Will my pockets close up and by gums grow back? You know how you get a paper cut on your finger; and you put a band aid on it to protect it and keep it clean so the skin will grow back and heal the wound? It is the same with your mouth. If you kill the bacteria and give your mouth a clean environment, your body will be better able heal itself. Your body knows it is wounded and is actively generating new skin cells to replace the ones damaged by the toxins. However, the bacteria is eating more skin tissue than your body is producing and you are losing the battle. Now you have the full and complete story. It is about 22 known bacteria. A full understanding of the cause allows you to make informed decisions about how to take care of your body so that your body takes care of itself. Posted by Health Time Products
