Psychological trauma can be a very complex thing. Not only do people respond very differently to such trauma, but each will also respond very differently to the way in which it is treated. For some, a talking cure may help, whilst for others this can even do more harm than good. And, as such, any mental health practitioner who needs to treat those who have experienced psychological trauma will need to have a certain amount of flexibility in their approach to ensure they are responding to the patient’s needs in the most appropriate way.
The mind is a funny thing, and whilst we can very easily estimate exactly how the body will respond to certain treatments, our minds are very different, and predicting emotional reaction is far more difficult that foreseeing a physical reaction. Therefore, adding as many skills as possible at your disposal will be extremely important, and being able to adjust according to patient reaction will also be integral.
EMDR training can be a great help to anyone trying to assist others in dealing with past traumas. It is a very natural approach that causes far less anxiety and tension amongst those with PTSD.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprogramming and effectively works by changing the way a person’s brain views an event. By doing so, the treatment will not only be far less troubling for a patient, but also far longer lasting and focused on allowing a patient to recall an event without the associated stress rather than simply burying the memory or even trying to justify it.
Just as a body can be programmed to respond a certain way to a certain stimulus, so can the brain, and EMDR training allows any practitioner to have a very valuable skill at their disposal to treat those who have experienced psychological trauma in a far more effective and manageable way.
