Photoselective vaporisation of the prostate, or PVP, is a minimally invasive, laser surgery for the treatment of an enlarged prostate. PVP is now being preferred to TURP (Transurethral resection of the prostate) as it doesn’t involve cutting or scraping of any tissue like the latter. What Does Laser PVP Surgery Do? PVP surgery uses a patented high power laser to remove excess prostate tissue. The laser quickly vaporizes and precisely removes the enlarged prostate tissue in a virtually bloodless procedure. PVP is even able to treat very large prostate glands that would not be so elementary to treat using other procedures and would require a complicated open surgery. With the removal of excess tissue, the urinary symptoms are rapidly relieved, and the natural urine flow improves drastically. Most patient are released after 24 hours, and in some cases even without a catheter. Side effects are minimal, and recovery time is short and is comfortable to an extent. How Is The Procedure Performed? In the procedure, the patient is first anesthetized. Then, the doctor (aurologist), inserts a imaging system known as a cystoscope through the penis. Then a fibre containing the laser is passed through the cystoscope to burn away the excess tissue that is blocking the urine flow. Natural urine flow is immediately restored as a wide open channel is created. All this time the urologist is able to view all this on a video monitor through the cystoscope. Once the procedure is complete, the patient is observed for 24 hours and then can go home. A catheter is usually needed for a day or two, and sometimes not. Are There Any Side-Effects? Side effects may include presence or traces of blood in the urine, which is common, and clears within 10 to 14 days.Patients may feel a burning or stinging sensation for some time after the procedure, which may last up to 6 or 7 weeks. One of the serious side effects is that normal ejaculation will cease with certainty after the procedure. This is because of the fact that the contraction that occurs during orgasm may not completely block the entrance to the bladder once some tissue has been removed and semen will flow back into the bladder resulting in a retrograde or ‘dry’ ejaculation without going out through the penis. Thus, future fertility is greatly reduced. rnThe PVP procedure can be found in multi-facility super speciality hospitals in Gurgaon, Delhi and NCR, also in such hospitals in Patna, and in one such hospital in Darbhanga in Bihar region. You’ll find the best urologists in Gurgaon and NCR, as well as Patna and Darbhanga in these hospitals.
