Trends in Tensile Structures Today

Facade of a building defines the character of the building. Use of a specific kind of facade is determined by the geographical factors to a major extent. Fabric structures have found a use since the olden days not only in buildings but also for a variety of things. For sure, the early use of fabric began at least 16,000 years ago when a man used the skin of animals to get protection from the sun’s rays.

Even today, the method remains the same though we see a vast improvement in the type of material we use. This outer structure is now being modified to withstand the effects of UV rays, extreme winds, and weather conditions. Innovation has laid the foundation for the creation of the fifth architectural material, the pretensions fabric. This means we add tension to the fabric structure so that they can be positioned in any manner other than the usual cubic geometric shape.

Most commonly, we see the use of tension member structures to provide a covering for parking lots, garden sit outs, and covered driveway for apartment blocks. More recently, tensile walkways have become the norm. It allows one to have walkways of various shapes, apparently floating in the air. Since it does not support much weight, one can have a variety of designs depending on the need and demands of fashion. For the most part, a building structure is not moving. This aspect gives us comfort and safety because it protects us from the elements.
