How in-tune are you with your body and overall health? The body-mind connection is truly phenomenal and for those of us blessed with good health this automatic signaling system is often taken for granted until our health becomes compromised. As we learn to pay closer attention we become more fluent in understanding the body’s language.
Can you feel when your blood pressure is high, or blood sugar drops? How many of you women know when you are ovulating? I did. Some women even report knowing when they have conceived, and I suspect middle aged men can sense when their testosterone level is low.
I never realized though, just how complex nor how many components of well being I took for granted; like sustained energy, hydrated skin and shiny smooth hair, regulated body temperature, and most importantly a good memory.
A few years ago I discovered I have Hashimoto’s Syndrome which is an autoimmune disease that results in producing an under active thyroid. In the months prior to seeking medical advice I found myself complaining about always feeling cold, and a metabolism that seemed defunct. I felt sluggish and pretty miserable. What I ate sat stagnant in my guts. Trying to keep light hearted I joked about my alligator like skin and the fear of misplacing my “brain book”, the date planner without which I’d be truly lost. But for the first time I felt the downward tug of depression and the physical difference between feeling emotionally drained and being biochemically depleted. I didn’t know all of these symptoms were related to hypothyroidism.
A trembling in the bones may carry a more convincing testimony than the dry documented deductions of the brain. ~Llewelyn Powers
The body certainly lets us know when something is wrong. The seemingly little symptoms forewa
us of potentially bigger problems. Take note of these shifts and take action. Go to the doctor. I was referred to an endocrinologist who is very compassionate and honors my intuition. It took a few months to find the right combination and dosage of thyroid replacement medication. I knew within a few days for example, that the generic version of Synthroid wasn’t working. Rather than dismiss my feelings the doctor sent me for another blood test which verified my intuition. Now when I go for check-ups he gives me a lab slip so I can have my blood drawn if I start feeling familiar symptoms that indicate my thyroid function is low.
The body also clues us on how to supplement and restore deficiencies. Have you ever started craving certain foods (healthy) and later discovered they are high in certain nutrients your body is lacking? Around the same time my thyroid function plummeted I started craving bananas. Instead of eating an apple a day, I ate a banana. Out of curiosity I researched the nutritional value of this fruit and found the following information.
“Banana is known for promoting healthy digestion and creating a feeling of youthfulness. It helps promote the retention of calcium, phosphorus and nitrogen-all of which then work to build sound and regenerated tissues. Banana also contains invert sugar, which is an aid to the metabolism. Bananas are of great value both in constipation and diarrhea as they normalize colonic functions in the large intestine to absorber large amounts of water for proper bowel function. Their usefulness in constipation is due to their richness in pectin, which is water-absorbent and this gives them a bulk producing ability. They also possess the ability to change the bacteria in the intestines-from the harmful type of bacilli to the beneficial acidophillus bacilli.”
The connections between the intuitive mind and body never cease to amaze me!... During the grueling time my daughter battled Shingles (Herpes Zoster) luckily she maintained her appetite. For months even through the heat of summer, she’d ask for salmon, broccoli, and lentil soup regardless of the meal time; for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The nutritional benefits of foods like salmon and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli are common knowledge in most households now a days. But what do you know about lentils? I learned that lentils are high in L-lysine an essential amino acid the body requires. And here is a portion of an article I read about L-lysine…
“Studies also indicate that lysine may be helpful in treating another herpes related virus called Herpes Zoster. This similar virus is responsible for the painful shingles blisters caused by a reactivation of an infection from a virus that actually started out as the chickenpox.”…
Thankfully my daughter and I are now both healthy and well. I hope these stories inspire you to stay tuned into your body and investigate symptoms that seem out of the norm and certain food cravings.
