Unfortunately, there are hundreds, if not thousands of students who, for one reason or another, do not function well in a classroom setting. Many schools have become overcrowded in recent years, and the size of those classrooms have increased to double the size. Instead of having twenty students, teachers are now having to contend with thirty or forty for each class. Your child may feel lost in the crowd, and his or her grades may begin to plummet. This is not good, and you, as the parent, have to look for a solution to this problem. Other than overcrowding in class, there may be other reasons your child is struggling. He or she may be suffering from a learning disability, unable to concentrate, and having trouble paying attention. Hiring a tutor to work with the child may be the best thing you could do for him or her. Often, once out of the classroom and working one-on-one with a tutor, the child will begin to come to life, so to speak. The personal attention may be all that he or she needed to show significant progress in problem areas. Individual teaching makes a huge difference to any student who is too shy to speak up in class, and this may be the answer you have been looking for. Unfortunately, many families have both parents who work outside the home, and the child is left to study and do homework on their own. Some of them do not have the self-discipline to do this without supervision, and with no one around to see that they do, the schoolwork suffers, especially with younger kids. There may be a babysitter in the home, but what are the chances that the children are going to come home and say “I have lots of homework-can you help?” Any average child will do their best to avoid sitting down with a pile of books after school. It’s perfectly natural behavior, but it also has a devastating effect on how well he or she does in school. Granted, some subjects are much harder than others. Your child may do very well in certain studies, yet be failing in others. It’s up to you to be able to recognize the signs that there are problems, and take steps to rectify the situation. Don’t think that eventually he or she will figure it out on their own, because that does not normally happen. Spend the money to hire a tutor to assist them if you want them to be successful in school. Some kids will actually turn to you and ask for help, but this doesn’t happen very often. They are afraid that you will be angry or disappointed in them and they don’t ant that to happen. Many students struggle along in silence, becoming more and more frustrated every day. They may even begin to “act out” in class, becoming the one who causes disruptions all the time. If this is not normal behavior for your kids, take the time to get to the bottom of the issue and try to discover what is going on. You may be surprised to find that they are getting failing grades, and this behavior is a way to cover up that fact. Rather than be embarrassed and teased by their peers, lots of students act like this because they just can’t bring themselves to ask for help. If your once “A” student is starting to bring home failing or below par grades, address the situation right away. Take the initiative and hire a qualified tutor to come into the home to work with your child. You may be pleasantly surprised to see that the results of private tutoring are having the desired effect, and the grades are beginning to improve. Tutors are able to explain in language the student can comprehend, and the learning difficulty may be nothing more than a failure to understand. Tutors are well worth every cent you spend, and if you want to give your child the advantage of a good education, you will hire one as soon as you notice any problems. It’s the best thing you can do for your children.
