TYPES OF DOORS ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURING MATERIALrnThere are a wide variety of doors and windows that can be manufactured or are available in the market for easy attachment. Based on the material of manufacture, some of their types as well as their main characteristics, advantages and disadvantages are given here to facilitate the selection by the owner of the house. 1. WOODEN / TIMBER DOORSrnTraditionally, wood or timber as it is commonly called has been the mainstay of door/window manufacturing. Its main advantage has been the local availability of the material and the ease with which it can be manufactured by local carpenters.rnCurrently, large varieties of wood are available in the market and its selection should be made according to the longevity properties and the budget of the owner of the house. While they can be used for all areas of the house, they are best placed for outdoor locations. Wood is most often used to make windows/doors. 2. BATTEN AND LEDGED DOORSrnSwing and rim doors are the simplest form of door and have been in use for centuries. These doors are made of door-height vertical wooden slats with thicknesses of about 35mm which are usually tongue-and-groove hinged. Usually, three ledges (horizontal elements) are provided, one each at the top and bottom and one in the middle.rnSlatted and rimmed doors can also be braced or braced and framed to provide rigidity and a better appearance. Such doors are commonly adopted for toilets, baths, toilets, etc., as well as in homes where the economy is paramount. 3. FRAMED AND PANEL DOORSrnThese types of doors and windows are most often provided in homes. The door frame is made of wood and the shutter panels of wood, plywood, slat, hardboard, etc. A number of patterns can be made on the panels, which makes these doors quite decorative.rnThe panels can also be made of glass. In cases where part of the door is wood panels and the rest is glass panels, the door is said to be paneled and glazed. Such doors have the design flexibility that can appear aesthetically pleasing. The door frame for these types of doors can be made of the wood itself or metal sections like steel etc. 4. FLUSH DOORSrnA flush door is a completely smooth door, having a plywood or medium-density fiberboard attached to a wooden frame that is relatively light. The resulting hollow core is often filled with a cardboard core material.rnFlush doors are most often used inside a dwelling, although with some variations they are also used as exterior doors in homes. The frames of these doors can be made of wood, steel, etc. that can support its weight. Doors are usually hinged on one side to allow the door to open in only one direction. 5. GLASS DOORSrnGlass is usually provided for doors and windows, primarily for panels. However, if the owner wishes, the doors can be glass for specific locations. Normally, such doors are provided at the rear of the house as they provide an unobstructed view of the courtyard or garden.rnGlass entry doors are just as beautiful, but care must be taken to ensure both privacy and durability. Cut-out glass panels placed in wooden frames are a common and beautiful option for entryways. Such doors are expensive and require good maintenance.rnThey are generally heavier than other doors in addition to being expensive. 6. STEEL DOORSrnSteel or other metal construction has been used for years because it is efficient and a solid option for exterior and interior doors. These doors can be solid or hollow.rnIt has proven to be a good substitute for wood and is widely used for making picture frames. Frames can be made of angles, tees, channels, or stamped steel plates. Brackets and hinges are normally welded to the frame in the case of steel frames. Normal wooden shutters, etc. can be attached to these steel frames. Shutters can also be fabricated from mild steel (MS) sheets, welded or riveted to frame of an angle iron or channel section, properly braced. Steel doors can be made of high-quality precision-engineered cold-rolled mild steel. They are durable and require minimal maintenance.
