Working as an electrician you can work for an electrical contractor, be self-employed, or teach. This is a person who has a skilled trade with a combination of experience working with electrical wiring and education. You must have a license to work as an electrician. Getting a license is managed by the state government. It has strict regulations that you have to meet in order to work as an electrician. The first step to becoming an electrician is an education program at a trade school, career or community college. To complete these programs will take two to three years and consists of training in the classroom combined with job placement opportunities. Once you complete your training you will have to pass a licensing exam. If you work as an electrician without a license you will have to tell this to your customer if self employed or to any potential employers. What type of work you can do as an electrician without a license is very restricted. Their work has to be check by an electrician who is licensed.

Being self-employed is the most common workplace for an electrician. Being licensed they can decide what type of service they want to provide when they open their own business. The services provided can range from commercial to residential. Most will specialize in one or the other. The reason is this will provide the electrician with an opportunity to expand their customer base.

If they do not want to become self-employed or just want to gain more experience before opening their own business they could work for an electrical contractor. In addition to gaining more experience this will provide more stability than working for themselves. It is also a great way to start your career as an electrician. If it is an established contractor that you go to work for they will often have business relationships with renovation and construction firms and builders. All of these businesses will often work together and coordinate activity between the different trades when working on a big project.

You could also become an instructor teaching others how to become electricians. You may teach courses in reading electrical schematics, basic wiring, and more. There are some electricians that offer courses in electrical safety to building operators, construction workers, and factory staff. To become an instructor, or teacher, you would have to complete a certificate program in adult education.

To become a good electrician you should enjoy interacting with different people, be independent, and like working with their hands. Being a skilled and licensed electrician is a valuable asset to any renovation or construction project. As an electrician you could become a project manager or shift supervisor. There are many opportunities for a licensed electrician.
