Types of Excavating

The general definition of excavating is the process of removing debris and dirt from the land by using manual labor and heavy construction equipment. Many excavating companies will specialize in certain types of excavating with each company using construction equipment that is specifically designed to assist in their particular excavation job. Home foundation installation This is a complex excavating operation that requires specialized training and experience. The ones that work on home foundation installation are general contractors. Their crews understand the required footer excavation procedures for different home types. They also understand the basic home design. This type of excavating requires them to use a backhoe to dig the foundation footers. The crew will have to know how to drive and operate the backhoe. Roadway excavating This type of excavating includes building and designing the roadways. The companies that specialize in this type of excavating require special construction equipment. This equipment is used to prepare and finish the surfaces of the road. Some of these special pieces of construction equipment include: • Asphalt machinesrn• Heavy loadersrn• Gradersrn• Rollers To operate and/or drive each piece of equipment requires training and experience. The crew operating these machines must ensure that the road surface created is level and smooth. Drain fields When building homes, factories, building, stores, etc they require sewage lines to be put in so this will be the job of these excavating companies. This will require that the crew have the training and knowledge in sloping techniques and land grading to make sure that the sewage system will drain correctly on the building lot. Laying gas pipes and water lines This type of excavating uses equipment that is designed to dig and lay long concrete pipe underground. Gas and water pipes are usually installed to serve most suburban towns and cities and provides water and heat to households. Pond building A company that is familiar with water drainage and ground erosion techniques does this type of excavating project. Man-made ponds will normally use water from streams that are nearby so it will make the pond suitable for natural habitat. A small trench is built to pull water from the streams into the pond. Ground clearing and tree removal This form of excavating will utilize heavy equipment to remove logs, trees, and shrubs from lots use for building lot for homes, stores, offices, etc. Most of them will use backhoes, loaders, and dump trucks to remove the debris. The heavy equipment is used with graders to level the land after the trees, shrubs, and logs have been removed. Archeological digs Here they used trowels and brushes to excavate antiques and artifacts from the ground. This type of excavating is painstaking and time consuming.
