There are countless types of protective coatings that you can use to enhance the durability, look, and function of different kinds of metals. Protective coatings help prevent corrosion and chemical reactions, which can greatly undermine the metal’s strength. They also protect the users of metal objects from certain negative effects. For example, protective coating on wires prevents people from experiencing electric shock. Here’s a quick view of the different types of metal coatings. Nonstick coatings Nonstick coatings are one of the most popular kinds of industrial coatings. These make use of fluoropolymers to keep things from sticking to the surface. These kinds of coatings are often seen in nonstick frying pans and other cookware to help facilitate easier cooking and cleanup. They are also excellent for reducing friction between metal parts that come in contact with each other, reducing damage caused by wear and tear. Chemically resistant coating Metal surfaces are usually prone to getting damaged by chemical reactions because of certain atmospheric conditions. Chemically resistant protective metal coatings offer greater protection against chemicals and extreme temperature changes. They are often used to protect conduits and metal panels in places where chemicals or extreme temperatures are involved, such as in laboratories and metal storage tanks (as inside lining). Thermal spray coatings This type of protective metal coating is specially designed to protect metal from damage much better than chemically resistant coating. It basically prevents the material from warping, corroding, or weakening because of constant extreme temperatures. As the name indicates, thermal spray coating is melted before being sprayed on the metal surface, forming a good insulating barrier Enamel coating Enamel coating, when used on metal, also makes an excellent protective metal coating. Metal coated with enamel usually end up with a smooth, glossy, nonporous finish. Besides looking elegant, enamel coated metals are virtually waterproof and immune to damages caused by chemical reactions. Corrosion resistant coating Specially designed to counter the destructive effects of corrosion and rust, this protective metal coating prevents the rust development process by interfering, if not outright stopping, the process. Zinc-based coating is very effective on metals, preventing rust from developing by oxidizing itself instead of the metal.
