Wheatgrass has been enjoyed since the dawn of civilization, and with good reason. First records come from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, where it was used to make cuts and wounds heal faster. Even Jesus Christ supposedly blessed and praised the use of wheatgrass. However, there are a few wheatgrass side effects.

Wheatgrass is full of various nutrients, which can be separated into several different groups. First of all, there is chlorophyll, which is responsible for seventy percent of wheatgrass content. It is a very powerful substance; some even call it concentrated energy of the sun. It is a great immune system booster. It can build the blood count because of its similarity to the hemoglobin. Also, it is a powerful detoxifying agent. There are powerful enzymes, vitamins and minerals. So, a few wheatgrass side effects shouldn’t pose a problem.

Wheatgrass side effects really aren’t that big of a deal. They are more annoyances than anything else. So without much further ado, here they are: nausea, headache, diarrhea and very rarely, allergies.

Nausea is a kind of wheatgrass side effects that represents a symptom of detoxification processes going on in our bodies. Nausea can also be attributed to the peculiar taste wheatgrass juice may leave on the sensitive taste buds of some people. As mentioned before, wheatgrass contains large amounts of chlorophyll, which helps the lymph in the process of toxin elimination by making the tissues release the stored toxic substances. This sudden release of toxic substances can cause nausea. Important thing to note here is that nausea subsides with time, as the body excretes more and more toxic substances. As far as the taste is conce
ed, wheatgrass can be made into a more drinkable beverage if you add some lime juice, a spoon of honey and perhaps a cinnamon stick.

Headache as a kind of wheatgrass side effects can occur together with nausea or alone. It is also attributed to the rapid detoxification processes caused by wheatgrass juice.

Diarrhea occurs when we’ve taken too much wheatgrass over a short period of time and the body is not able to digest it properly, thus causing one of the most annoying wheatgrass side effects. The smart thing is to go slow in the beginning, gradually increasing the amount of wheatgrass juice day by day until your body is prepared to digest larger amounts of wheatgrass.

Finally, people allergic to wheat should keep away from wheatgrass. Also, people allergic to molds should take special care in making sure wheatgrass isn’t mold infested, since it can be, in poor growing conditions. Poor growing conditions include high humidity, low air circulation, high planting density etc. The best way to ensure your wheatgrass is mold free is to grow it yourself. That way you control all the factors of wheatgrass health.

There are different types of molds that infest wheatgrass. Some are benign in nature, while others can be more serious, because they are pathogenic. On the bright side, they are easy to spot and remove.
