Here is a compilation of three short love poems written by twelve-year-old Emily. The first is a short poem about how Emily loves her teachers. During the school year, her literature class was given an assignment to write a letter to a departing teacher. Emily asked if she could write a poem instead and was given permission.nnThe second poem was written for a hand made card that Emily made for her mother for Mother’s Day. Similarly, the third was written for a hand made card for her father for Father’s Day. nnThe Last Day nby: Emily nnThe saddest thing nIt's hard to say nIs seeing you on nYour last day. nnI take it for granted, nThough I see you a lot, nJust how much you do nAnd your kind thought. nnYou helped me understand nThings I couldn't before. nI can't bear to watch you nWalk out of that door. nnThough I'll miss you, nI know indeed nYou'll do great out there nPlanting new seeds. nn"What seeds", you are asking n"Why can't I see?" nBut you have already nPlanted one in me. nnIt will grow and grow, nAs I learn more and more. nEach day I'll remember nWhat you taught me before. nnI'm happy for you nTo plant more seeds. nI know they will grow nWithout any weeds. nnThere won't be weeds. nYes, of that I am sure. nFor you have touched them. nNow they are pure. nnThe saddest thing,nIt's hard to say, nIs seeing you on nYour last day. nnA Mother’s Day Poem nby: Emily nnMom, I love you.nThat is true.nAll the waynTo infinity, too. nnNow that I’m oldernAnd wiser, too,nI realize justnHow much you do. nnMost of the timenI don’t look to seenHow many thingsnYou do for me. nnFor this I am sorry. nNext time I’ll try.nYou are wonderful,nAnd I’m glad you’re mine. nn(Emily really can put out what she feels in a love poem, even at age twelve. I hope you see this in time for your next Mother's Day because it is probably how your child feels about you, whether spoken, written or acted.)nnA Father's Day PoemnBy: Emily nnThis is for you,nDear Daddy of minenTo let you knownI think you're devine. nnA bunch of yearsnHave flown by real fastnBut do not worry,nI'll always keep our past. nnIt'll travel with menWherever I go.nI'll remember the times we've hadnSo long ago. nnPlease don't be sad,nDear Daddy of minenFor there are more to come,nYou will find. nnI'll always remembernThose things we didnLike snowmobilingn(When Mommy was hid). nnRiding our bikes,nHitting golf balls,nGetting up on skis,nWithout a fall. nnDriving the golf cart,nNicktoons Racing,nJumping on the trampoline,nAnd later your back aching. nnNo matter where we gonOr what we do,nIn my heart alwaysnThere's a place for you. nnI hope this card helpednYou to seenJust how muchnI love you, Daddy! nn(More telling than the exact words are the eyes of the daughter as she watches her father read the personally prepared poem. I feel that all children can write down their feelings. Some may not be able to put in poem format, but I see them as poems anyway as they are from the heart. This may be the best way for them to express themselves. nnWhen you see some spare time for your child coming up, why not give some space, and provide pencil and paper. Ask your child to write about how he or she feels about birds, or snow, or the blue sky, or you, or whatever. My guess is that you will be surprised!)
