Aging is a natural process that everyone has to go through regardless of your race or ethnicity. The natural process of aging and gravity’s toll will cause your skin to age and sag. You might think that you didn’t sleep well the previous night but you know that sleeping early will no longer cause your skin to go back to its original place. Non-surgical medical procedures to treat skin laxity are among the most popular treatments in aesthetic medicine. In the past, many treatments have claimed to achieve skin lifting outcome. However, none of those claims could be sustained by visible, long-lasting results, leaving many people dissatisfied. ULTHERAPY: NON-SURGICAL SKIN LIFTING Before Ultherapy was introduced as a skin lifting treatment, the solution to skin laxity was a surgical facelift. It is an effective but invasive procedure that has a long downtime and comes with associated surgical risks. Ultherapy uses ultrasound to deliver High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) energy to tighten the skin without creating any incision on the skin. It is the only non-invasive treatment cleared by FDA to lift the brow, neck, chin, and décolletage. Using HIFU technology, the procedure targets the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) to produce contraction to lift and stimulate collagen production for skin tightening effects. Unlike the previous so-called skin lifting treatments with low efficacy, Ultherapy bypasses superficial skin to deliver consistent temperature of 60-70°C with the right amount of ultrasound energy at controlled depths. At the ideal temperature and ultrasound energy delivered to the SMAS layer, it triggers the skin to stimulate new collagen growth as it has been proven that collagen production happens at around that temperature. In addition, Ultherapy comes with real-time imaging system that allows the doctor to see the layers of tissue they are treating. The visualization enables the doctor to safely deliver the ultrasound energy on the areas that are needed the most – safely and effectively. HOW LONG DOES ULTHERAPY SKIN LIFTING TREATMENT TAKE? The beauty of Ultherapy is that there is no downtime. There is no bruising or crusting that other treatments may induce. Patients can return to work on the same day. This is why this skin lifting treatment is sometimes called – “lunchtime lift”. After the consultation with the doctor, a numbing cream will be applied on your face for 20 minutes to reduce the discomfort you may experience during the procedure. “Sometimes, pain relief medication can be prescribed to further reduce any discomfort for patients with low pain threshold,” says Dr. Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics. Treatment areas will be marked out to determine the number of shots and the appropriate areas of treatment. During the treatment, ultrasound gel will be generously applied on the skin to facilitate the contact between the skin and Ultherapy applicator. The treatment starts by delivering ultrasound energy to different layers of the skin using different Ultherapy cartridges. During the 45 to 60-minute treatment, three different types of cartridges will be used to deliver ultrasound to the dermis, deep dermis, and SMAS layers for an effective lift. WHEN CAN I SEE RESULT? The effects start as soon as the treatment is administered. You may see some lifting effects immediately after the treatment but the full effects can only be seen about 3 to 6 months later as it takes some time for the body to stimulate natural collagen. The duration of response after a single treatment can last about 12 to 18 months, depending on your lifestyle. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SURGICAL FACELIFT AND ULTHERAPY It is important to note that a surgical facelift does not produce the same results as Ultherapy. A facelift stops the process of aging and Ultherapy slows down the aging process by stimulating the production of collagen. Ultherapy skin lifting treatment is suitable for people with mild to moderate skin laxity who are mentally unprepared or unwilling to undergo cosmetic surgery. It is also suitable for people who want to achieve natural skin lifting result without the associated risks of surgery.
