More and more people are now beginning to understand physiotherapy as a real and effective treatment for various physical conditions. But physiotherapy is not exclusive for sportspeople, but also for children, dancers, workmen, the elderly and all peoples who suffer from movement disorders resulting from musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary and cardiac health issues. Who Needs Physiotherapy? At some point of time, many people, young and old will need such treatment. Among the people who will need physiotherapy at later times of their lives are: • The elderly, for their treatment of old age conditions including arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and post hip and joint replacement surgeryrn• Children, for their treatment of cerebral palsy, spina bifida and physical imbalance among others. • Patients of cardiopulmonary conditions like heart attacks and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseasern• Patients of nervous system conditions including multiple sclerosis, stroke, cerebral palsy, paralysis and Parkinson’s diseasern• Patients of bones, joints and muscle disorders including repetitive strain injury, arthritis, back and neck painrn• Sportspeople with sports injuries Physiotherapists aim to address physical issues by applying appropriate therapies to help us regain our sense of movement and the use of our body parts. Aside from that, the goal of physiotherapy is not only to reduce body pain and improve physical fitness but also to help us stay active and independent. Physiotherapy in Sports Physiotherapy has many applications in sports where various injuries are commonplace. There are many injuries that can sideline an athlete for weeks out of games or could spell an end to his/her sports career. But physiotherapists can help athletes overcome their injuries and speed up their recovery through specialized therapies. rnSports are a very physically-demanding activity. It requires most of our strength, body coordination and flexibility. To avoid serious problems on the field or court, physiotherapists work with sports professionals to: • Assess the athlete’s strength, coordination, flexibility, joint health, etcrn• Assess the sport’s requirementsrn• Find solutions to the athlete’s problems in his sports performance by doing certain exercises, wearing protective gear or making adjustments in the sport Providing Functional Improvement People who have undergone physiotherapy believed it have brought them significant physical improvement. They have regained their physical abilities and the use of their limbs and other body parts. These benefits have been proven in the context of stroke. The exercise therapies stroke victims applied encouraged them to become physically active and busy, thus helping them to reinvigorate their lifeless limbs. Physiotherapy as Source of Faith and Hope Patients who have undergone physiotherapy looked on their physiotherapists as their source of renewed faith and hope. At times of their conditions, many patients had already lost the will to recover and instead resigned to their fate until being attended by physiotherapists. The physiotherapists told the patients they can recover, such words which helped the latter renew their hopes for recovery. Such optimism can help patients to full recovery and a positive outlook in life. Are You Seeking Physiotherapy? Would you like a Physiotherapy Sydney treatment for a condition you have?
