Primarily, one has to understand what an antioxidant is and how they are beneficial to our body. Only then are requirements and the advantages of antioxidant food better understood. We are all victims of oxidative stress. This is the damage caused in every one of our bodies, sometimes by the very oxygen that we breathe in.

Antioxidants work against this stress at the cellular level. This cleaning up is effective only if there is a sufficient amount of antioxidant present in our bodies. They act in a manner to ward off degenerative diseases like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc. This is makes it necessary for us to consume foods that are rich in antioxidants.

Oxidative stress creates harmful free radicals that wreak havoc with our systems and bodily organs. The free radicals are atoms that have lost an electron and are very unstable. They bombard the other atoms to find an electron and make themselves more stable.

In the process of bombarding the cells, they can even damage the DNA, which is one of the basic building blocks of a cell. Such type of damage can mutate the cells and cause cancers and other degenerative diseases.

The oxidative stress also accelerates the process of aging in humans. Thus to keep such damage at bay, it is important for each of us to include the right kind of antioxidants to our diets and be vigilant about our health on a regular basis.

Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals by supplying the much-needed electron and shield the cells from further damage. Free radicals are generated even by cigarettes and pollutants in the environment. Therefore, it is clear that some factors are under our control, whereas some others are not.

The role of antioxidants is very important and made very clear now. The antioxidants have to be present in sufficient amounts to neutralize the free radicals effectively. Antioxidants can be obtained through foods and supplementation. They can be got through fruits, vegetables, some nuts, spices, and meats.

It is important for us to add the right kind of antioxidant food to our diets. We should be aware of what food we consume on a daily basis. Health-care professionals and nutritionists would be able to suggest a well-balanced diet taking into consideration all these important factors.

Though there are a number of foods that can be used as antioxidants, citrus fruits and berries have a very high content. Among the vegetables, the different and brightly colored vegetables such as tomatoes, broccoli, spinach etc, possess higher antioxidant content.

Other foods with notable antioxidant content are honey, aloe vera, etc. The most powerful antioxidant known to mankind is the healthy chocolate or unprocessed cocoa powder.

The body accepts complete foods more naturally and there is more synergy in this diet than consumption of isolated minerals and vitamins. It is the responsibility of every individual to wisely choose the components of her/his regular diet as she/he is the person most affected by the choice. The clue is to choose wisely.

When you work out regularly, your body is actually experiencing large amount of oxidative stress. To stay healthy, you have to load up a lot of food filled with anti-oxidant. To stay fit and healthy, your workout regime has to be coupled with a balanced diet. But how would we know if our diet is well balanced?
