Usage of Fire Survival Cable

According to the present trend, the usage of Fire Survival cable & Circuit Integrity cables is steadily on the increase due to the obvious advantages it has over conventional (PVC FR – FRLS) cables. PVC FRLS Cables are suitable for use in a vertical run in a shaft or from floor to floor and have fire-resistant characteristics capable of preventing the carrying of fire from floor to floor. They only stop the propagation of fire from floor to floor. However, during the fire conditions, the cable itself gets destroyed and short circuits i.e. the cable malfunctions and does not survive in fire conditions. Hence, PVC-FRLS cables are only FLAME RETARDANT cables and can be used only when curbing Flame Propagation in non-critical systems where fire may not cause damage to life and property. On the contrary, Circuit Integrity (CI) fire resistance Cables are designed to meet the requirements of FIRE SURVIVABILITY, i.e., they survive under fire conditions and retain enough dielectric strength and also carry the rated current at rated voltage even during burning. In many high value/high hazard facilities, a detection system is not only to get the timely notification for the safe evacuation of occupants but to operate the life safety scheme associated with the Fire Alarm system. The detection of Fire does not mean that it stops growing. The fire rapidly grows exponentially until it is controlled and limited by the functioning of the linked systems like Ventilation, Smoke Extraction, and Fire Suppression. Keeping in view the substantial role of detection systems in life safety of occupants, the wire circuit must ensure survivability for continued circuit operation for a specified time under fire conditions.
