For jaggery we can say that all good things always comes in a good looking package is not essential always. The benefits of jiggery includes its ability to cleanse your body, act as a digestive agent, sweeten your food in a healthy manner and also provide good amounts of minerals which are essential for the normal development of your body.

What is jaggery? It is actually an unrefined brown sugar made from date palm sap and sugar cane. It can vary from golden brown to dark brown in colour. It contains up to 50% sucrose, approximately 20% invert sugars, moisture content of up to 20%, and the other insoluble matter such as wood ash, proteins and bagasse fibers in it.

Jaggery is used as an ingredient in both sweet and salty dishes across the country. People use it with a pinch in preparations of SÄmbhar, Rasam and other staples in India in some dishes of Gujarat and Bengal. In north India, it is widely use in preparation of some sweet snacks like ‘gur or tilgurkipatti, laddus mixed with ghee and wheat flour etc. On some traditional festivals Rajasthan’ speople are cooking Jaggery Rice too as for traditional symbols etc.
Apart from the cookery values jaggery is also used in some Ayurveda medicines. People can add jiggery powder commonly known as shakker in their meals in winters. This is a good source of heat property which energies you in winters.

Other uses - include jiggery toffees and jaggery cake made with pumpkin preserve, cashew nuts, pea nuts and spices. Jaggery may also be used in the making of alcoholic beverages like palm wine. It is also used in organic farming for the making of manure.

Health benefits of Jaggery

  • It becomes a simple energetic drink if added with some flavor able soft drink. It works there as a glucose supplement.
  • Jaggery effectively cleans the respiratory tracts, lungs, food pipe, stomach and intestines. It pulls out dust and unwanted particles from the body.
  • After any meal if we take a bit of jaggery. It activates the digestive enzymes to change acetic acid in the stomach. Thus it is helpful in digestion.
