If you are involved in internet marketing you are probably familiar with "landing pages. You know, the pages you shout to the big fat, bold (and usually red) text, to get them to enroll mailing list or buy the product. I am interested in the sources and the color and sometimes I wonder if this method works, or the use of such "in your face" fonts and colors is really counterproductive.
Seeing Red
I do not know about you but I've always thought that the text in red indicates danger. Could the giant, the red message, stressed that actually scare customers away? I realize that red also indicates the urgency and I am sure this is the message the marketer wants to put across: "Buy now or miss the chance to get this great discount price." The balance is probably the case that a small amount of text in red was in that sense of urgency, but not a good idea to cast their landing page with the red as it looks more like a horror movie poster of a sales pitch.
The color is a subtle but powerful tool in your marketing arsenal. I think the use of font colors very similar to the product or the product logo offers a pleasant drive to the page. Choose your color from the central source with care, you must be a good game, but must also be legible.
Source of Wisdom
Impact (and Lookalikes) seems to be the source of choice for Internet marketers worldwide. It's big and brazen, as a source of old playbill. I think there is also something of a military aspect to it. One of the consequences is not easy. OK, so that the seller is not trying to be your best friend, he / she is trying to sell something. They want your offer is clear and simple for you to understand.
However, "raw and shouty" is not the same as "clear and simple." There are plenty of other websites easy sans-serif (ie, features not fussy 'serif' on the final blows) sources that may try instead. Good old Arial never hurt anyone, but yes, I realize that it is the most exciting in the source box. I like Gill Sans - is a bit retro and a little artistic, but still sharp and clear.
A sense of style
Font styles can be further improved their squeeze pages, or harm them if they're not careful. Underlining is the biggest culprit when it comes to making an unholy mess of the page. As if the impact was not red enough and is shouty and aggravates the problem by emphasizing the many! Use underlining sparingly, especially if your source is already big and bold. I'm a fan of italics and I find this "halfway house" a useful tool between the normal source and the brute force of underlining. Italics are great for the selection of a paragraph of text to draw attention to it. Do not do this with an underscore or will be horrible.
But it works
I have yet to see any comparative statistics to demonstrate the superiority of a daredevil page, press impact loaded, red text on a well designed, with clear typography page modest. If you know otherwise I'd love to hear from you. The great thing about having a landing page is more protected and that differentiates you from the competition and maybe even gets some more sales. And, after all, is the objective of the exercise.
I'm actually a bit lazy on landing pages. I tend to build as quickly and automatically as possible using Wordpress Plugin Squeeze page then edit them to fine-tune before boarding.
