Northern California is a vacationing couple’s dream, so long as nobody objects to scenic views, off-the-grid hideaways, and of course world-class wine. In this article, we will discuss several activities and destinations that can be fit into a weekend itinerary, including the wine-making valleys of Napa and Sonoma, the rugged, coastal beauty of Bodega Bay, and the historic and peaceful surroundings of Fort Bragg.

The Wine Countryr
For any couple looking to make a trip to Northern California for the 1st time, a stop in Napa and Sonoma is an absolute must. California by itself is the fourth-largest producer of wine in the entire world, and is known for producing world-class varieties of chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, and zinfandel grapes. While there are wine-growing regions across the state including Monterey County as well as the inland community of Lodi, California, it is the areas of Napa and Sonoma that are most commonly associated with the rich tradition of California wine. The most elite wineries of this region rank amongst the finest wines in the world, and command exorbitant prices. However, the region is also a geographically diverse collection of microclimates that offers a huge range of distinctive, territory-driven boutique wines. With hundreds of tasting rooms dotting the valleys of Sonoma and Napa, there is something for just about any budget and any palette in the region.

Bodega Bay and the Coastr
After checking off Napa and Sonoma and having your fill of wine, a quick drive towards the coast will get visitors to the small community of Bodega Bay, where there are a multitude of available sights and activities including hiking, biking, horseback riding, golfing, bird-watching, and numerous water activities. The activities on the water in this region include swimming, surfing, diving, deep sea fishing, boating, whale watching, crab-fishing, and more. For the less adventurous looking for more relaxation and less recreation, there are an assortment of day spas offering manicures, massages, hair styling, mineral baths, and more.

Fort Braggr
Finally, those looking for some historical perspective on some of California’s earliest non-indigenous settlements should head north to Fort Bragg near where the Noyo River meets the Pacific Ocean. The small community boasts some incredible views of the Northern California coastline, and was originall founded as a military fort prior to the American Civil War. The original purpose of the military outpost was to maintain order on the surrounding Mendocino Indian Reservation. However the military presence was short-lived, as by 1867 the reservation was discontinued and the fort was abandoned. In the 20th century the town experienced a re-birth as a fishing and logging town. Today, tourism is also a major component of the local economy as the historical attractions and activities similar to those offered in Bodega Bay make the area a desirable attraction.

The aforementioned destinations encompass just a few of the great getaways in Northern California that are all within a short driving distance of the city of San Francisco. With outdoor activities, world class wines, and a plethora of budget to boutique lodging accommodations, there is something for everyone in this idyllic region of the California coast.
