Automobiles are everywhere. They are in parking lots, driveways, roads, highways, and pretty much anywhere else there is paved asphalt. The government has crash standards to try and protect the lives of drivers, however vehicles can still be deadly, damaging machines. Auto insurance protects drivers from the financial damages that their vehicle can cause and auto insurance is also required in most states.
Auto insurance is as varied as the vehicles on the road. Whether the vehicle is a new hybrid being used as a daily driver, a sports car that sees the light of day one week per year, or an old pickup used as a work truck, an auto insurance policy can provided helpful, and required, protection. Different types of auto insurance provide different levels of coverage. The most basic auto insurance is liability auto insurance, which is normally enough coverage to satisfy state laws. Comprehensive auto insurance includes coverage for vehicle damage regardless of fault, so the person who caused the accident can still get their vehicle repaired under their auto insurance policy. In addition, there are several important auto insurance riders, or policy additions.
Liability auto insurance can be written as a combined single limit coverage or split limit coverage. The coverage is offered for bodily injury and property damage. Combined single limit auto insurance coverage lists a total amount of coverage that pays for both bodily injury and property damage. Split limit auto insurance coverage has specific limits for bodily injury and property damage expressed in the auto insurance policy. Liability auto insurance does not cover the cost of bodily injury or damage for the at fault party in the vehicle accident. Liability auto insurance also typically extends to rented vehicles, so the auto insurance policy offered during a vehicle rental is not always necessary.
Full coverage auto insurance is an expanded auto insurance policy that offers more protection than basic liability auto insurance. Full coverage auto insurance is made up of two basic components: collision auto insurance coverage and comprehensive auto insurance coverage. Collision auto insurance coverage provides coverage for vehicles damaged in collisions. Collision auto insurance coverage has a deductible that must be paid, but damages beyond that are covered by the collision auto insurance coverage. Collision auto insurance coverage is usually required when taking out a loan to purchase a vehicle. Comprehensive auto insurance coverage covers the cost of damages from any other cause besides a collision. These include, but are not limited to, fire, theft or attempted theft, or damage from animals.
Auto insurance is required in nearly every state, and proof of auto insurance can be required as part of obtaining or renewing a driver’s license. The basic liability auto insurance coverage is required so that drivers are not stuck footing the bill for damages others cause. Comprehensive auto insurance provides protection that will not only pay for damages to the other party, but also pay to fix your vehicle as well. Contact your independent insurance provider to find the best auto insurance for you and your vehicle.
