Versatile and Flexible Silicone Polymers Are Now Available at Alfa Chemistry

Silicone polymers such as PDMS have seen wide application in medical applications. In January, 2021, the US-based chemical supplier Alfa Chemistry announced the launch of silicone polymers, which are versatile and flexible and can be used in many scenarios. Together with previously released polymer products, now the company is able to provide adsorptive polymers, biomedical polymers, electrofunctional polymers, functional PEGs, photoactive polymers, etc.  rnSilicone polymers, or more properly called polysiloxanes, do not have carbon as part of the backbone structure. As a class of hybrid organic/inorganic polymers, they show desirable surface properties such as low surface energy and high flexibility. Silicones have excellent thermal stability, water repellency, and electrical insulation properties, and they find many uses in oils, greases, and rubber-like materials.   “Polymerized siloxanes with organic side chains are commonly known as polysiloxanes. They have a long history in biomedical applications, especially in cardiovascular applications,” says a spokesperson from Alfa Chemistry. “Silicone polymers are among the most versatile specialty molecules known to mankind. So far, over 7,000 specialty products are based on polysiloxane. Some 85% of silicone applications are surface related, which means they can be specifically used for surface modifications.” In addition, silicone polymers also found use in products like cosmetics, food additives, deodorant and soap. Being inert and stable under a wide pH range, silicone polymers are increasingly viewed as an alternative to perchloroethylene, which is widely considered environmentally undesirable for dry cleaning.  rnDue to the unusual properties mentioned above, such as good thermal and oxidative stability, valuable resistance to high and low temperatures, excellent water repellency, chemical inertness and complete physiological inertness, not surprisingly there is a long-standing interest in the exploration of possible applications of silicone polymers.  rnThe silicone polymers provided at Alfa Chemistry are widely ranged and can be classified as fluids, elastomers, and resins.
