A Veterinary Technician, sometimes referred to as a Veterinary Assistant, works to alleviate the pain and suffering of sick and injured animals. Among the technician's duties are the feeding and caring for animals, as well as administering prescription drugs, as directed by the supervising veterinarian. For anyone wishing to pursue a career in the field, formal technician training is essential.

Life in this field is very rewarding and can be exciting and varied. The care for animals is required in many different environments, including private clinics, shelters for strays and animal hospitals. Many of these places operate throughout the night, however, so anyone thinking about entering the profession should prepare themselves for long and arduous nights.

The important work of a technician is essential if veterinarians are to carry out their roles effectively and save the lives of animals. This is why the training program is considered to be very hard work and comprehensive. Training is sometimes given in colleges, but there are now an increasing number of people who are receiving on-the-job training. Studies will often begin with the basics required to operate as an entry-level employee. Such skills include the administering of medicine, basic lab skills and the disinfection of cages and work areas.

There are two primary advantages of studying in a workplace environment. Firstly, the trainee is usually paid a salary and has many of the course and tuition fees paid for by the employer. Secondly, there is now better way to learn that practicing practical skills in an authentic environment. Tasks such as preparing samples for analysis, the cleaning of surgical equipment and the execution of post-operative care can be perfected long before certification has been granted.

As well as the basic, practical skills that need to be learned, there are a number of other disciplines that need to be studied. Elements of chemistry, biology, microbiology and veterinary technical skills will be included in any course. Students will also master skills in the fields of radiography, anesthesia and hematology.

All veterinary technician training will culminate in a compulsory examination, administered by a state-run board. In most cases, the exam is called the National Veterinary Technician exam, or VTA. While the majority of these examinations are comprised of written papers, there will also be oral and practical elements involved. Before taking a permanent position in any sphere of animal welfare, the candidate will need to provide a certificate as proof of graduation from an accredited course.
