Shimla is the capital of Himachal pardesh and is also called as "THE QUEEN OF HILLS".As the history of shimla until the british arrived,there was nothing but a sleepy foest glade known as Shyamala which is the local name of "Kali".Then a Scottish civil servant named Charles Kennedy built a summer home in Shimla in 1822 and nothing rnwas ever the same again. By 1864 Shimla had developed into the official summer capital of the British Raj.Every summer until 1939, the entire government of India run here from the heat of the other plains areas with all their clerks’ books and forms filled out in third copies.In 1903 when the Kalka–Shimla railway line was constructed the status of Shimla as a India’s premier hill station was assured.Shimla was even briefly the capital of Punjab until the map was redrawn in 1966.At that time, Shimla was known for the temple of Hindu Goddess Shyamala Devi, and not as a city as it is today the British began to develop the area.The people of Shimla are informally called Shimlaites.and the variety of festivals are celebrated here every year.Shimla has many temples and is often visited by toursits from nearby towns and cities.The Kali Bari temple, dedicatedto the Hindu goddess Kali is near the mall. Jakhoo Temple, for the Hindu god Hanuman is located at the highest point in Shimla.Sankat Mochan, another Hanuman temple, is famous for the numerousmonkeys that are always found in its near by and is located on Shimla-Kalka Highway about 10 kilometres from the city nearby temple of Tara Devi is a place for performing rituals and festivals Ther is also a Gurudwara near the bus terminus and a Church on The Ridge. The temples of Shimla shows the excellent stonework of the architects there. Shimla is an excellent base for treks in the surrounding hills ,rafting on theSutlej, trout fishing at Tattapani 51 km from Shimla The Mall is the best place for shopping in Shimla. Another popular shopping place is the Lower Bazaar, which is also known as the Subzi Mandi. rnShimla is full of Pine and Deodar trees. The wood has been mainly used in building the temples and palaces of Shimla.Shimla,is also facing the heat this summer the temrature was 31.9 degrees Celsius few days before, which was six degree above normal and also the second highest temperature recorded ever. Shimla has two state libraries with a collection of over 47,000 old books divided between them. The one is at Gandhi Bhavan in the University has over 40,000 books and the other library, a heritage building on the ridge, has 7000 books.rnThe amous boly wood actors Anupam Kher and Priety Zinta were born in shimla. The Kalka Shimla Railway, a narrow gauge track, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records and the distance of kalka to shimla from rail is 96 km The train passes through 102 tunnels rnand 864 bridges.
