Slovakia [1] or the Slovak Republic (Slovak: Slovenská republika Slovenská or both names are officially recognized), landlocked country in Central Europe. It is surrounded by Austria in the west, north-west of the Czech Republic, Hungary, southern Poland and Ukraine in the north east. Slovakia is a modern and democratic country in the European Union.
The main reasons to visit Slovakia, its natural beauty, vivid history and a lot of opportunities for recreation (and for a small country, it is quite easy to combine all three). Slovakia has nine national parks, which cover a relatively large part of the country and feature the highest part of the Carpathian Mountains, the High Tatras, which offers great opportunities for mountain and winter sports, as well as great vistas. Geologically, a large part of Slovakia is made of limestone, which, along with a number of sources and rivers led to the formation of many caves (12 open to the public, some of which are UNESCO list) and the beautiful rock structures, in the mountains and the Slovak Paradise and Slovak karst waterfalls. Even for these areas, there are some beautiful landscapes, and in Slovakia, a well-marked hiking trails.For, history buffs thousands of castles and chateaus of Slovakia has the highest per capita in the world, ranging from simple well-preserved ruins of the residential castle with furniture, so if of medieval history fan, look no further. There are also many Gothic and Baroque cities and towns in Slovakia, including the capital. There is also a well-preserved examples of wooden folk architecture, including manufactured entirely from wood and a wooden altar in the world's highest church.
There are many mineral and thermal springs in Slovakia and around some of these world-renowned spas have been built to offer excellent curative therapy or just plain relax. You can also chill out, swim and sunbathe on several local lakes and pools, or coastal water park Aquacity try if you're feeling more adventurous. In particular, Bratislava boasts a lively nightlife, as well as a popular destination for get-togethers.
Slovakia has a temperate climate with hot summers and sunny, cold, cloudy, wet and snowy winters. The climate is continental with four seasons, and the overall climate is mild, is a large temperature difference between summer and winter months.
Slovakia is mainly Catholic country, so the main Christian holidays are observed, as well as some other festivals. Unless otherwise stated, these days are public holidays and banks, and most amenities and shops will be closed:
• Slovak Republic Day - January 1 - Easy, Czechoslovakia split into two 1 January, so New Year's Day is a national holiday. It is traditionally celebrated on sleeping until noon.
• Epiphany - January 6 - Three Magi celebrating the arrival in Bethlehem. Shops and banks are closed.
• Mardi Gras period (Fasiangy) - this is not a national holiday and festival season. Some of the villages with food and drink offered to organize a traditional market, and may be masking the city in March, and a lot of balls, dances and carnivals going on. 6th January before Ash Wednesday (February-March).
• Easter - March / April, the date depends on the lunar calendar. Good Friday and Easter Monday, both national holidays. There are several different traditions associated with Easter. Served in a traditional meal of eggs and the Easter ham with bread and horseradish.
