Voice-based communication phone system has assumed enormous importance in recent times and it is today almost inconceivable that an individual, household or a business organization can live without this facility. The telephone transmits and receives the human voice in a point-to-point communication system facilitating two people separated by long distances to communicate with each other.

Although originally designed for simple voice communications, most modern telephone systems have a plethora of amazing capabilities.

Today’s telephony has gone beyond the basic purpose voice transfer and has the potential to record spoken messages, send/receive text messages, shoot and display photographs or video, play music, and surf the Internet. The present trend is phones integrate all mobile communication and computing needs and these are called smartphones.

Various types of telephone systems are available to specifically fulfill the needs and demands of small and midsize business as well as large corporations. For long, it was the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) that reigned supreme. But during the recent decades, tremendous advancements had taken place and the traditional methods of landlines communication gave way to digital telephony – which in turn – has now led to IP telephony.

The PBX (Private Branch Exchange) telephone systems are ubiquitously found in most business premises. They are noted for modular functionality, scalability, centralized management, redundancy, innovative user-friendly features galore and sophisticated networking.

Internet Protocol (IP) telephony - also known as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is usurping the place hitherto occupied by traditional telephone network technologies.

Advanced telephone system provides stunning features like Auto-attendant, Call Forwarding (in multiple ways), Speed Dialing, Find-me-follow-me, Do not Disturb, Call Transfer, conferencing, Toll-Free Numbers, Caller ID Blocking, Multi-Ring facility, Music-on-hold, Distinctive Ringing, Enhanced Voicemail, Area Code Selection, Anonymous Call Block, WiFi, paging, intercom, voicemail with e-mail integration, advanced data networking etc.

The modern day voice communication system may be broadly classified into three different types:

Key Pad systems: These systems enable the user to regulate the calls manually. They are endowed with features like answering machine facilities, speed dialing, automatic call accounting, caller ID, remote supervision etc.

Hybrid systems: These are traditional phone systems integrated with VoIP technology. The features include intercom facility, integrated voice mail services, caller identification, call forwarding, call transferring, call routing and remote connectivity.

PBX: These are telephone exchanges used primarily in large corporations and facilitate employees to share a common phone line for communicating with each-other and for making outbound calls.

But the fact is most small and midsize business houses can not afford to buy or maintain expensive PBX systems. But small and midsize businesses can today have a virtual PBX to meet all its communication needs and also avail all the rich features of high-priced and sophisticated communication system.

The biggest advantage of virtual phone system is you are not required to invest in any hardware/ software or maintain and manage the system. These systems will be operational from the service provider’s place.

As the telecom market scenario is rather confusing, you need expert advice from a professional person to guide you in making the right choice for your business.
