Americans struggle with a shocking variety of addictions ranging from cocaine, alcohol, nicotine, marijuana to caffeine, food, steroids, gambling etc. More saddening is the fact that only around 30 % have recognized and accepted the addiction problem and around 10% have gone ahead with some kind of rectifying therapy.
What is addiction?
Addiction is basically an uncontrollable habit and a compulsive need to depend on a particular substance like alcohol, food, drugs etc. It can be more complex if it’s a behavioral addiction like work, sex, gambling or food. When any habit starts interfering with the healthy rhythm of your mind, body or soul and the person becomes wholly dependent on that habit for his survival, then it becomes an addiction.
Understanding your addiction:
Many people do not even realize that they are dependent on something for survival. A person smoking 50 cigarettes a day will inevitably attribute it to work pressure and will never think of it as a negative addiction. But with 50 cigarettes a day the person is practically addicted to it for his survival and thus sitting on a time bomb! Similar is the case with drug and alcohol consumers. What might start as an innocent and fun activity soon becomes a compulsory activity for them to survive. It is very essential that friends, family and the person himself realizes it and understands the problem. By realizing the problem, you are already half way towards recovery!
Treatment:
The challenge faced by most addicts and doctors is not just to lessen and remove the addiction from their lives, but also to change the lifestyle and thought process of the patient. It is very important for treatments to focus on the core problem – relapse. Doctors need to make sure that patients do not go back to old habits. Various treatments are offered by various rehabilitation centers. The treatment centre and the method of treatment is decided upon the addiction of the person. One-on-one interactions and constant conversations with the doctor or specialist does wonders for the patient. Proven scientific techniques, methods, medicines, instruments are used to make sure that the patient is on the correct path of recovery. Along with modern medicines and therapy, altering lifestyle and modifying thought process of the patient is very crucial so that there is no chance of relapse.
After Care:
As in the case with any illness, chances of relapse are high and hence addicts need proper post treatment medication, love and care. In the rehab centre, patient is under constant observation. But after he goes back to the outside world, there is temptation galore! Along with systematic care and willpower of the patient, support of family and friends is also very crucial. Usually treatments equip the patient to be aware of the temptations and ways to avoid it.
Recovery is all about putting together a new life which is free of any addiction. It means you have regained the controls of your life once again and are ready to take responsibilities!
Addiction not only hinders the person`s life but also affects the people around him negatively. It is essential to wake up to the reality and undergo proper therapy and treatment. Always remember it is curable and people are there to help you!
