Where do you start once you've decided you want to visit Walt Disney World as part of your holiday to Florida? For most people, visiting Disney World is the number one reason to visit Florida on holiday. Walt Disney World is situated about 5 miles from Orlando and covers about 25,000 acres. The park is open 365 days a year, and being one of the top tourist destinations in the USA, more than 500 million guests have passed through its gate since it originally opened in 1955. This most extravagant of Florida attractions consists of 4 different theme parks;
  • The original Magic Kingdom
  • MGM Hollywood Studios
  • Epcot
  • The Animal Kingdom
Plus, there are 2 waterparks;
  • Blizzard Beach and
  • Typhoon Lagoon
But that's not all, Walt Disney World now extends to 24 Disney Resort hotels for guests to choose from that cover all budgets and tastes ranging from hotels with animal themes to those with sports and movies themes, as well as cabins and beach villas. You can even camp on sight if budgets are tight! And there's more... For those not interested in the theme park rides, the complex offers a number of unexpected outdoor activities such as horse riding, off-road Segway tours and fishing. If you like to play golf, you have the choice of 5 courses at the Disney resort. For younger golfers, there is the Oak Trail golf course which is smaller at 9 holes, whilst the other four golf courses consist of 18 holes each (one of which was designed by Tom Fazio). There's even micro brewed beers at Disney's Big River Grille and Brewing works. As with all of the Florida theme parks, there are good and bad times to go to Disney World. Busy periods are Christmas, spring break and June, July and August. As the park gets less busy, the cost of tickets also goes down. One of the best low cost times to go to Disney World is when the kids are still at school, so try and plan your holiday to Florida during September. Keep in mind that different parks seem to be busy on different days. Monday is usually the Magic Kingdom's busiest day whilst Tuesday is Epcot's busiest day. An easy way to plan your trip is to use the many Disney busy period calendars to get a good visual view of when the busiest and least busy times are. Also, don't forget that if you stay at a Disney World hotel the park is open an extra hour for guests! So once you have decided when to go, it just remains to buy the tickets. This is a black art in itself and whilst there are a huge range of ticket options, the most useful advice is to plan ahead and buy tickets before you arrive to avoid high prices and long queues. Never buy tickets on the day. As with many American attractions, Disney World is accessible to wheelchair users. For those visitors with hearing impairments, Walt Disney World provides listening devices (which are available for a refundable deposit), telecommunications devices and written information for most of the attractions. You can also get Braille guidebooks from the many information points in each of the parks and some of the park's signposts are also in Braille. A trip to Walt Disney World will be a magical experience for kids of all ages, and one you will remember forever. Whether it's the one off amazing shows that happen daily or the glittering night time processions before the firework displays, you will never forget your trip to Disney World.
