Pain is part of everyday life for most people. Whether it’s sore muscles from exercise, pain from an injury, or any number of ailments, everybody has something. Your pain may be easily managed with some ibuprofen or an ice pack, but sometimes it doesn’t go away. When a persistent, nagging pain sets in, you may be tempted to ignore it until it just goes away. Here are a few reasons to pay attention when the pain doesn’t go away:
It May Only Get Worse
Many people think that the pain will eventually go away if they just take pain medication and forget about it. However, this is rarely the case. The reason the pain persists is often that pain medication is doing nothing to fix the root cause.
For example, you might have tooth pain because you have a large cavity. You can take over-the-counter medication, which will temporarily alleviate the pain, but the pain will keep coming back unless you get the cavity filled. If you don’t get it taken care of, the pain will get worse and you may even lose a tooth. Any dentist, like those at Cobbe Dental & Orthodontics, can treat a cavity with ease, so there’s no reason you should lose a tooth. When your short term treatment comes and goes without providing relief, it’s time to get it checked out before it gets worse.
It May Be Serious
Many people ignore dull or faint pain because they assume it’s nothing. While most minor pain will go away after a short time, it’s important to know when it’s a warning sign for something serious. Specific, intense pain in certain parts of the body can mean a swiftly approaching problem. Chest pain, for example, may be a warning sign for a heart attack.
Persistent pain may not be as intense but can indicate just as serious a situation. For example, persistent, manageable back pain is more often a symptom of a serious problem, like a tumor or infection, than sudden, intense pain that can be caused by muscle cramps.
Treatment May Be Simple
Even though pain can be an indication of a serious problem, the solution can be simple enough. Doctors are trained to determine the cause of a problem by giving you a thorough examination and asking you the right questions. If nothing else, seeing a doctor and having them rule out serious medical issues can give you peace of mind. In serious cases, seeing a doctor and starting treatment immediately can give you a better chance of fighting cancers, infections, and other medical anomalies before they spread.
Aside from diagnosis and treatment, seeing a doctor as soon as you can likely be a lot less expensive than stocking up on medicine that you don’t need and doctor visits down the road.
Although it may be tempting to brush off the pain, sometimes it is worth looking into. Not only can the pain get worse, but it can also be an indication of a serious health problem. Even if the diagnosis is just a pulled muscle or cramping, you’ll be glad you went to a doctor to check it out.Further reading
