There are different ways to implement the sales force automation system and we need to have a look at them. All these different methods are important for sales managers to get the best out of the subordinates working under them.
It is important for sales managers to genuinely care about the people who are working under them. Today, most employees are mature and are able to make a distinction between genuine care shown by their sales managers or whether the care shown only is with the idea of getting the job done. If the managers are genuinely transparent, honest then there is no limit to which the employee will go in his work. The employee must get the impression that his manager genuinely values his work, appreciates the difficulties that the employee faces, expresses his gratitude for a job well done and ensures that the employees work is appreciated and rewarded. Conversely, if a manager gets an honest well meaning card for his birthday, he also would feel happy that his subordinates are grateful people who do not only look for good deeds to be done by their manager towards them.
Another point with regards to the sales force automation system, is the importance of positive criticism – when correcting an employee, it sometimes helps what you tell your subordinate, how you express your point, in the midst of whom you do it - if you shout at your subordinate consistently in front of other staff it is not going to be good for his morale and for his self confidence. It would help if you take him aside and explain what he did was not correct. Point out what was the correct way of doing that job, all the time reiterating the importance of pulling up one’s socks to ensure that productivity does not get affected may not deliver results. It would also help to enquire if the employee is facing some personal problems which is impacting his work.
One more point, with regards to the sales force automation system, would be, to not be too rigid. It is good to have a plan and to stick to the plan as far as possible but one must be able to adapt if the need arises rather than realizing too late that one should have made the necessary corrections some time back.
With regards to the sales force automation system, it would help if one is perceived as being largely fair and just. One must be able to make the right assessments as to who is working well rather than getting taken in by people who pretend to be working well. Staff must get the impression that their manager is intelligent enough to see who is working well and who is not. Agreed, that there must be an element of fear that if one does not work well, he could lose his job.
A good manager must be able to see who the bad employees are who could be setting a bad example. They should be able to take steps to ensure that such employees are sidelined and told in no uncertain terms, that unless they change for the good, they could find themselves without a job, at least in their current company
