No website is complete without a ‘call to action’ page of some kind – this page will encourage visitors to sign up for something, to pass on a message to someone else or even to make a purchase. When it comes to an effective call to action page, there are a number of web design dos and don’ts that your team should be well aware of before starting work. The following list should give you everything that you need to know.

Do

  • Make your page intuitive to use
When a visitor lands on your web design, they should be able to instantly understand a few things (what the purpose of the page is, how they can benefit from the page, and what they are expected to do next). If these things are not immediately obvious, the visitor will see the page as being useless and will most likely leave shortly after.
  • Minimize your navigation options
The more options you give visitors to navigate away from the call to action page, the more likely that they will actually do just this. This page needs to act more like a funnel, directing visitors to the single direction that you wish them to take. Leave out unnecessary links and only include those that you think the visitor will want.

Don’t

  • Use too many graphics
Whilst graphics look nice and can give your website personality, having too many can actually make the web design appear cluttered. When it comes to a call to action page, the company logo and a ‘hero’ image (of the product or the service being marketed) are generally all you need. You should also be wary of how you use icons on the page.
  • Use red for your call to action buttons
In most cultures, red is synonymous with stop signs, aggression and even danger. Even its more positive connotations (such as passion and love) are notable for being big commitments. When it comes to call to action and web design, you should steer clear of using red, as it is actually more likely to encourage a negative response.

Whilst the above list of do’s and don’ts form only some of the actions that you should be taking (or avoiding) when it comes to the web design for your call to action pages, they do form some of the more neglected areas. Other steps that you should be taking include – only including information that your visitors need, keeping the page simple and directing visitors to the best option. Steps that you should be avoiding, on the other hand, include – letting your call to action button become lost, asking for too much information and forgetting to test your buttons.
