Before sealing any deal, make sure you have in writing the specifics you agreed upon. Be as detailed as you can. In terms of any business deal with regard to the Internet, all is virtual and intangible. It’s hard to separate virtual matters so it’s best if all arrangements are laid down.
You finally get to sign a contract with a web design company that best matches your requirements to create your website. Make a note on the demarcations on ownerships. It’s very significant to remark that when time comes you have to separate from your web design company, you should have agreed at the outset what components of the website you will be taking with you.

If the web design company is going to make purchases on your behalf, you must be in the know of these transactions. You must also be aware of the transactions ongoing with regard to the software and hardware you are going to use for your website. As the web design company will be handling this, you must form an agreement with them that they be transparent with you to form a clear and smooth working relationship, after all you’re paying them for their services.

If they will provide web servers, you have to be notified whether they are buying it for you and you will be paying for it afterwards. Or it can be that they will be procuring the web servers and will rent it out to you. Another can be that they have their own web servers and will lease it to you. What’s possibly a more difficult arrangement is that they’re just renting web servers and are subletting those to you.

It’s advisable to buy your own domain name. It’s fairly easy and there are lots of websites giving tips and instructions how to do this. The advantage of buying your own domain name is that upon setting up your new web hosting (that is say after transferring out from your previous web design company), you can login to your domain name account manager and redirect the nameserver to your new web hosting server.

During your contract engagement it is inevitable that you share resources in order to complete your website development. But at the end of the day, it’s critical that you set what will belong to you and that to the web design company upon separation.
