You might be using some blasting ideas to spice website design, but at times just goof up your website. It is good to be experimental but while being in web development you also have to be very specific about your requirements and goal. Several aspects are there which have to be kept in mind before developing a site. Here are few of the common web development mistakes.

Dependency on Flash

If you are using flash in your design assuming that everybody has installed, it can be a blunder. Not every user has flash installed in their system. Moreover, many search engine robots do not index Flash files. Although, Google is said to have started indexing of Flash files, still they suggest designers to provide entire all text content and navigation in HTML files. So, there are high chances that if your entire site or site navigation is dependent on Flash being available, again you might not score very high with search engine rankings. Certainly, over using Flash can be dangerous for your site.

Dependency on JavaScript

JavaScript might be one of your favorite scripting languages to code your website, but the fact is that this can affect your SEO ranking. Cause, it makes your website inaccessible and not bad for search engine rankings. Currently, search engine robots cannot efficiently interpret JavaScript; although reports are there that Google is working to make Googlebot support JavaScript support. So, if your site is dependent on JavaScript to navigate, you shouldn’t expect great ranking in search engine results.

Using text as image

Most web designers use images of text in order to make site more attractive. However, it increases the time required to download images instead of text. Site that takes time to load are definitely not good in terms of search engine indexing. By doing this you also make it impossible for users to copy the text and for many users to view text by enlarging it.

Outdated HTML coding

Often people use multiple nested tables, <font> elements, spacer GIFs and presentational markup. Doing this, increases complexity, leads to bloated pages, makes website slow and inaccessible, and naturally makes site bad for search engine rankings.

Using invalid HTML attributes

Most of the web designers do not known that uses of deprecated or browser specific attributes like left margin, margin width, language, border for <img> elements, height for <table> elements, etc. are invalid and unnecessary. You can use CSS instead.

Using browser-specific CSS

Proprietary CSS like scrollbar styling, expressions, filters etc. that works only in Internet Explorer are invalid as well. Features that work in a specific browser are not accessible by all browsers and users. If it is really necessary to use IE-specific CSS, you can rather move it to a separate file, plus use conditional comments to ensure that only IE sees the invalid rules.
