Marketing and sales have changed. Yes, it is still important to get in front of people and the more the better. What has changed is who you are able to get in front of on a regular basis and how. People have more ways than ever of avoiding talking on the phone or in person. Do not call registry, call display, answering machines, you name it, almost everyone has one or more ways to avoid talking to you. It has made people hard to get ahold of as first contacts. Sure, you can ignore people’s desire not to be contacted, but eventually there will be a price for that. Potentially, that price for ignoring prospect wishes could be very high. Many things haven’t changed much, but getting in touch with people has become more problematic because control of contact is now firmly in the hands of the customer if that customer is a private person. This inconvenience can make it difficult today to start growing your business. So, what is a body to do? Technology has given an answer to this dilemma. People still want to buy things. For that they need information. Online marketing strategies have moved to the entrepreneur – the teacher – into the position of being the “expert” source of buying information. It makes functional websites that include a blog possibly with support from article and video libraries for information and education a new essential. There are some things to learn, of course, to do the job effectively. You have to learn how to get your materials and ideas in front of interested people. Sound familiar? The change is in the direction of the initial relationship. It is the customer you want to find you. You want the customer to think of you and your company as the “go to” source for expert information on whatever it is for which they are looking. It pays to do this, to be this company or individual consistently and that takes some work. The old way took some work as well, just a different type of work. The trick is getting people who are looking for information to stay in contact and explore your resources. The bonus for you as a business person is that you only have to develop those resources once. Companies like Merrimac Marketing can help take the time and expertise commitment out of getting started quickly and well. The big change is in getting potential clients to come to you. It’s a different mindset, attracting people to your opportunity as opposed to going out and exposing people to your opportunity. It has made a good, functional website a necessity. It has made the provision of extensive information a necessity. It has meant ceding control of parts of the buying process to the customer a reality. Where control of contact and buying information was something the business owner/salesperson had tight control over, now that control must be shared with interested customers, especially the choice to access your process at all. The trick is in making yourself easily findable in multiple places. Now, when a person has been through your process and has been educated to the point that they are comfortable making an informed decision the process becomes much more certain than before. Closing becomes easier and surer. Many elements and principles have not changed, but the start and end of the process surely have. Make yourself the “expert” people are looking for in their web searches. With mobile searches increasing as a share of market almost daily businesses need to be available to this rapidly growing pool of “purchase ready” prospects, the sooner the better
