Weeds can be one of the most frustrating problems a gardener can face, no matter what you do – they always seem to come back in greater numbers to ruin all your hard work. If you have a problem with weeds in your garden then you can tackle the problem by using one of the many types of non-selective weedkiller that are on the market. This article will help you choose the right weedkiller and also give you tips on its application. Choosing the correct non-selective weedkiller is essential – selecting the right product and applying it correctly will save you time in the long run and also – prevent you from using too many chemicals in your garden. Non-selective weedkiller works in 3 main ways: Systematic – this weedkiller is applied directly to the foliage of the weed and the chemical is transported around the whole plant. This type of weedkiller is ideal for use with perennial weeds and weeds with tough, hard to reach roots. Ideally this weedkiller should be applied two to three weeks before you wish to remove the weeds completely. Contact – when you want a quick answer to your problems this type of weedkiller is more suitable. It works by destroying the plant on contact, but only the parts of the weed the weedkiller touches are destroyed so it has to be applied thoroughly. Preventative – if you have weeds which produce many seeds a preventative weedkiller is the best one to use as it stops these seeds from germinating. This type of weedkiller is long lasting so will remain in the soil and keep preventing the germination of dormant seeds which can remain in soil for years. This type of weedkiller is also recommended for use on patios and paths. Once you have selected the type of weedkiller you require and have purchased the product there are a few simple steps to follow for its application. Weedkiller can be bought ready-to-use with its own spray nozzle already attached or you may have to mix the product with water and apply using a watering can. So make sure you have the right equipment before you wish to start. If the weeds you are trying to get rid of have a waxy coating on the foliage it is a good idea to beat them with a stick to break the leaves – this will allow the weedkiller to penetrate the leaves quicker. Apply the weedkiller at the right time – late spring is a good time to tackle the weeds as they will have just started to grow. When applying the weedkiller it is always advisable to wear gloves and to also cover any plants you do not wish to be affected as non-selective weedkiller will kill all plants it comes into contact with as opposed to selective weedkiller which will only attack certain species of weed. The final thing to remember is – be patient! Some of the weedkiller on the market can take up to three weeks to take effect. So if you have a problem with weeds in your garden, selecting the right weed killers, and applying it in the correct way is essential. Whenever you purchase a weed killers always make sure you read all the instructions carefully and carry out any safety precautions thoroughly to ensure the safety of yourself and your pets.
