Forget everything you learned as an adult putting on makeup and think back to those teen and ’tween years when you lined your lids without smudging and sported traffic-stopping lipstick. Yes, ladies, the ’80s are back, according to Paige Padgett, the eco-makeup artist extraordinaire (pictured below with client Jillian Michaels) who gave us these exclusive tips. Paige’s goal is to reduce our “cosmetic carbon footprint” through using eco-friendly makeup to interpret the season’s hottest trends, and this look is no exception. One of my favorite trends is the hot-pink lip—these colors are straight from the ’80s. This summer we’re seeing them in lipsticks, as opposed to gloss,” Paige says. Her favorite? NVEY ECO Organic Lipstick 351 in Warm Pink. But here’s how the trend has grown up since you slicked up with Wet ’n Wild: no lip liner, which is “harsh and dated,” Paige warns. “Keep the edges soft. It’s not the Robert Palmer girl look any more.” The smoky eye for a night out is still hot for summer—with a few twists: “Create your smoky eye in color, like plums and moss greens,” Paige says. “And where before you’d do a smoky eye and clean it up to make it very precise, this season the edges are not supposed to be perfect. Make them smudgier, so you can’t really see where they begin and end. Just like lips, the look is messier. Lived in.” Paige recommends Nvey Eco Organic’s five-color NVEY ECO Organic Creative Eye Color System - 1 1 in a super trendy plum palette. “These combinations are really versatile, they can work together or separately,” Paige says. “Use the darkest color as a liner to smoke out the lash line top and bottom. Don’t contour in the crease—the deepest concentration of color should be at the lash line and get lighter as it goes out. Use a medium color on the eyelid, gradually moving out to the brow bone.” Paige acknowledges that Nvey Eco is more expensive than many makeup lines, but it “performs amazingly, on par with any other professional line, and is totally clean and chemical-free.” Plus, one palette has enough color for any look you want to create, meaning you can reduce and reuse. Bonus! Finally, Paige recommends finishing the look with a sweep of nude blush and a light coat of mascara. “You don’t want to have the mascara too clumpy or over the top because it really takes away from the beautiful smoky eye,” she says. Another update? Adding colored mascara in the same palette that you used for shading.“Go monochromatic,” Paige suggests. “Blue mascara with blue smoky eye, purple with purple.” For time-intensive photo shoots, Paige swears by Dr. Hauschka’s Mascara. “It acts like an Yves Saint Laurent mascara, but it’s chemical free.” And oh yes, it comes in purple.
